SPYSHOTS: F30 BMW 3 Series eDrive Prototype

BMW-3-series-Plug-in-hybrid-2

Goodbye ActiveHybrid, hello eDrive? After sighting a prototype BMW X5 eDrive on test, we now have spyshots of a prototype plug-in hybrid F30 BMW 3-Series sedan on test.

Like the X5 eDrive, it has an additional flap for the charger plug-in socket below the A-pillar. In addition, the prototype has the sticker ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ on the side.

While ActiveHybrid is more performance-focused and pairs a large 3.0 litre turbocharged engine to an electric motor without any plug-in capabilities, BMW’s next generation hybrid system was previewed last year in the form of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive.

The eDrive concept used a four cylinder (we’re assuming 2.0 litre displacement) turbocharged petrol engine to a 95 horsepower electric motor. The batteries can be charged from a domestic socket and offers emissions-free travel of up to 30 km, at speeds of up to 120 km/h.

30 whole kilometres per charge. Wow.
    (Yes, that was sarcasm).
