Mercedes Benz Charged Gasoline Injection (CGI)

mercedes_cgi.jpgMercedes Benz was the first car manufacturer to use direct fuel-injection in it’s road cars, putting a direct-injection engine into the 1955 300SL Gullwing. Back then, things like fuel economy and emissions were not really an issue, but it is today. So car manufacturers everywhere are taking a look at gasoline direct injection to improve fuel efficiency and emissions.

UMW Toyota to release new model in 2 months

yaris_sedan_hatch.jpg

UMW Toyota managing director David Chen said in an interview that Toyota would be introducing several new models this year. They will be CBU units as previously reported, and the first will come in 2 months time, which would be somewhere at the end of April or the beginning of May.

The new car will be a CBU model, and it will be a small-sized car. It could be the Toyota Aygo, but rumours are that it’s the Toyota Yaris, also known as the Toyota Vitz or the Toyota Belta.

A bit of name confusion here, but let me clear it up for you. The Toyota Vitz is a little sporty hatchback while the Toyota Belta is a Vitz with a boot, recently launched in Japan. In other markets, the Toyota Yaris hatchback is the Toyota Vitz while the Toyota Yaris sedan is the Toyota Belta. They are available in 1.0 liter and 1.3 liter engine options. Photos of the sedan and hatch are in the image above.

I’m not sure whether the sedan or hatch would be introduced here though. It’s likely the hatchback, as the sedan form with CBU tax brackets would probably cost near to the Toyota VIOS price range, and having two city sedans in that price range doesn’t make sense.

UMW Toyota’s target for this year is to break the 100,000 cars sold figure. It sold 92,000 last year. Other cars like the Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla Altis will continue to be on sale as usual, but the Toyota Corolla Altis will face competition from the new 2006 Honda Civic this year, so I’m not sure if Toyota will facelift it again or introduce a new model. Toyota’s market share is 16%, and is the leader in the non-national car segment for 16 years continuously.

Toyota Aygo Football

aygo_small.jpgThe Toyota Aygo is the smallest Toyota yet, marketed in places in the UK as a city car, with the classic city car characteristics like easy parking, great fuel economy, and an affordable price. It shares the same platform as the Peugeot 107 and the Citroen C1, which are basically all rebadges of the same thing. It’s powered by a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine making 67 horsepower. Toyota says this engine is the lightest engine ever installed in any modern car, weighing in at only 69kg. Top Gear reviews the Toyota Aygo, and as always they have something interesting in store. Honda to develop Honda Fit Hybrid?

honda_fit_blue_red.jpg

Rumours are that Honda is developing a hybrid version of it’s Honda Fit (Honda Jazz on our shores) for worldwide release as early as Q2 2008. It is intended to be the first budget hybrid, priced at less than USD$ 12,000. The cheapest hybrid around so far costs US$ 16,840. This rumour was reported by Nihon Keizai, one of the big financial dailies in Japan.

Honda spokespeople neither confirmed nor denied this rumour, but remarked that Honda had the technological ability to mount it’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system onto most of it’s vehicles, including the Honda Fit. The report by Nihon Keizai says Honda is developing a new 1.0 liter engine to twin with an electric motor for the Honda Fit’s Integrated Motor Assist system.

Audi A8 4.0 V8 TDI excellent fuel economy

audia8video.jpg

Jeremy Clarkson learns how to drive slowly in an Audi A8 powered by a 4.0 liter V8 turbodiesel engine. He puts the car through the challenge of going from London to Edinburgh and back to London again on a single fuel tank of 72 liters (19 gallons). That’s 1287km (800 miles). And he manages to do it. That’s RM92 for 1297km of mileage.

A little performance stats - this Audi A8 is a generation older than the current version and it’s 4.0 TDI twin turbo V8 engine makes 275hp at 3750rpm and 650Nm of torque between 1800 and 2500rpm in classic diesel style. It can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds.

Video after the jump.

How does Nitrous Oxide work?

zex_nos.jpgWhen it comes to souping up cars, even laymen usually have two words in their heads – turbo and NOS. NOS, or its proper name nitrous oxide. Sounds cool doesnt it?

Contrary to popular believe, NOS isnt the chemical acronym for nitrous oxide. It is actually the acronym for Nitrous Oxide Systems, the largest manufacturer of automotive nitrous oxide injection systems out there. Its become so synonymous with the gas, like how Maggi is associated with instant noodles, Colgate is associated with toothpaste, or Nescafe with instant coffee, or how making a photocopy of something is called Xerox-ing. Nitrous oxides chemical designator is actually N2O, because it has 2 nitrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

Lets find out more about nitrous oxide injection systems.
