Honda CR-Z spotted in Kota Damansara – on the way in?

Might it be that the Honda CR-Z three-door hybrid hatch is set to make its way into the market here soon? The example seen in the pix intimates so – reader Daryl spotted the trade-plated vehicle parked somewhere in Kota Damansara, and snapped a photo of it for us. The car made an appearance last year at KLIMS, but no word then on when it was due in.

The car, which wears a 1.5 litre LEA i-VTEC four-cylinder mill and Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system offering 122 hp and 174 Nm, will of course benefit from the continued import and excise duty exemption for hybrids that runs until Dec 31, 2013 announced in Budget 2012.

Of interest is whether the car, when it comes, will be equipped with the six-speed manual transmission that’s general issue or wear the optional continuously variable transmission as standard fare here. Guess we’ll find out when someone snaps a photo of the interior!

Honda Insight with 1.5 liter IMA system to debut soon?

Check out the Honda Insight section on Honda Japan’s website and you’ll be greeted by the teaser image above, which seems to indicate that an Insight with a larger 1.5 litre i-VTEC IMA engine will be available soon. So far, most Honda hybrids including the Honda Insight sold here in Malaysia use the 1.3 litre system, while the 1.5 litre system is reserved for the sporty Honda CR-Z.

A larger more powerful system in the Insight would certainly be welcome for those looking for a little more fun in their green motoring, but do not want to go for the 3-door body of the CR-Z. With the hybrid tax exemptions just recently extended by the Malaysian government, perhaps Honda Malaysia can introduce this 1.5 litre variant of the Honda Insight as well? I’m sure there’s a market!

Honda City Special Edition launched – limited to 500 units

We guessed so last month, and now Honda Malaysia has launched a special edition Honda City, the “2011 Honda City 3rd Generation Special Edition”, to give it its full name as per press release. Just 500 units of this City SE will be made available.

No mechanical changes, just aesthetics. The SE gets a full Modulo aero kit set that includes a front under spoiler, side under spoiler, rear under spoiler and duck tail spoiler. Besides those, SE owners get to choose a special number between 001 to 500 for their car. This number is then engraved on the door sill plate (side step), like ‘City SE 001’ for example. SE numbers will be obtained upon registration of the car.

Additionally, City SEs will come with “advanced nanotechnology solar control film” for all screens and windows. Available only in Polished Metal or Tafetta White, the City Special Edition is priced at RM92,890, which is RM2,500 more than the standard car. Honda Malaysia points out that the add-ons are worth over RM6,000, so you’re getting a good deal.

You can check out the City SE at any Honda dealer from now.

VIDEO: Honda City facelift launched in Thailand

We carried some leaked brochure scans of the Honda City facelift last week. The brochure, from Thailand, gave us pretty good looks at the changes made, both in and out. Now, the City has been officially launched in the Land of Smiles, and this TVC (featuring very good looking talent) confirms what we’ve seen.

As a recap, up front, there are slight changes to the grille design (bigger gaps in the side sections), which remains instantly recognisable as a City. The whole bumper is new, changing from the current U shape to an X shape. The seven double-spoke design wheels seen on this Thai SV spec are also new.

At the back, the City’s unique tail lamps come in a new design featuring two clear stripes, and there’s a new lower bumper incorporating a diffuser style insert painted in black, with reflectors on each side. Inside, everything looks the same, except for the dials, which are now accented in blue instead of orange. There’s also an ECO indicator that lights up when you’re being light footed.

Available in three trim levels – S, V and SV – the facelifted City is priced between 559,000 baht to 704,000 baht in Thailand.

Honda Brio debuts in India – set to take fight to Suzuki

Honda has given its Brio hatchback its Indian debut – the car was officially introduced two days ago, and enters the country’s most popular vehicle segment looking to chip away the dominance held by the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai’s i10.

Reports state that the 1.2 litre Brio will be priced between US$8,040 (RM25,635) and US$10,381 (RM33,100) in showrooms in New Delhi. Honda Siel Cars said that the competitive price has been achieved through efforts to control costs, maximising production efficiencies and minimising the impact of currency fluctuations, primarily through parts localisation.

The company says it sources 80% of the Brio’s parts locally, with an aim of increasing it to 90%, adding that Brio parts are already being exported from India to Thailand, where the model made its global debut in November last year, and its production debut in March; the company also provides Indian-sourced parts for the City and Jazz models it assembles in Thailand. The Brio is set to be sold in Indonesia next year.

Honda also said that it is mulling the possibility of exporting the Brio to neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal in the near future, though it had no immediate plans to bring out a diesel version of the compact for the Indian market.

Fourth-generation 2012 Honda CR-V Concept revealed

This is the 2012 Honda CR-V Concept that made its public debut at the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, California. It officially shows us the styling direction for the all-new, fourth-generation CR-V, which has been spied testing before. It’s set to go on sale in the US by the end of the year and the production car will debut at the LA Auto Show in November.

Compared to the current CR-V, the concept takes on a bolder look with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a stronger front fascia, which ditches the “double grille” look. The front bumper’s smooth-flowing lines are highlighted by a horizontal three-bar grille that encroaches into the multi-reflector headlight cluster. The lower bumper wraps upward to convey SUV capability with a generous approach angle; the design also improves aerodynamics.

The CR-V’s signature vertical rear taillights remain, but it’s now wrapped into the body, and the result hints at the Volvo XC60. The side glass area also sees a change in shape – the upper line falls all the way down in the current car, but both meet in the middle on the concept. The section aft of the rear doors appear bigger here, too.

We don’t expect the production model to look significantly different from this, perhaps with less showy wheels and a more subtle sump guard. Do you like where Honda is heading with the CR-V?

Honda City SE with special bodykit to be unveiled soon?

is Honda Malaysia preparing to launch a special version of the Honda City soon? A contest running on their website seems to indicate so, as the URL of the contest page has the string “citySE” in it. Is there going to be a Honda City SE available soon?

The contest is called the “Guess The Car Parts” contest and it involves the contestant identifying four different car parts from a drop down list. Then you have to fill in a slogan. My guess some of the four photos are also a teaser for perhaps some bodykit accessories that will be equipped on the Honda City SE.

I don’t think this is the Honda City facelift which we saw recently as the design of the front bumper of the facelift is different – an X shape for the front end instead of a V shape. One of the photos for you to guess in the contest kinda looks like the front bumper and it still shows a V shape.

The three best entries with correct answers and best slogan will win an iPad 2. You can check out the contest page by clicking here.

Honda City facelift brochure leaked ahead of Thai launch

It seems like Honda is ready to roll out a facelifted City soon! These brochure scans recently appeared on Indian Autos Blog, and were said to have been sent to them from Thailand. The scans show a Thai brochure featuring a red hero car with the tagline “Always Ahead”.

Up front, there are slight changes to the grille design (bigger gaps in the side sections), which remains instantly recognisable as a City. The whole bumper is new, changing from the current U shape to an X shape. This trick was also used in the current facelifted Camry.

The seven double spoke design wheels seen here are also new. However, it is for the Thai SV spec (highest), although both V and S grades also get freshly designed rims.

At the back, the City’s unique tail lamps come in a new design featuring two clear stripes, and there’s a new lower bumper incorporating a diffuser style insert painted in black, with reflectors on each side. Inside, everything looks the same, except for the dials, which looks to be accented in blue. The current dials are lit in orange.

The current gen Honda City was launched here back in early 2009, so it’ll be three years old soon. Time for a refresher, so perhaps we could be looking at a Malaysian launch of this facelifted version late this year or early 2012.

Honda CEO: NSX confirmed, sportiness still on the agenda

We’ve heard it before, but for good news such as this, it’s worth hearing another yes from the big man. Honda president and CEO Takanobu Ito is reported by Autocar UK to have confirmed that the company is making a “new NSX” on the eve of the Frankfurt show. He may be the boss now, but Ito is an engineer at heart.

“I spent part of my early career at Honda developing the NSX, and specifically the aluminium body. I really enjoyed that experience, and learned much, so it is my wish that Honda engineers have the experience of developing a sportscar like the NSX in future. Within Honda, our engineers are already looking at developing such a car,” Ito said.

“You can’t depend on a high power output to call a car sporty anymore. The original NSX was about high power but also good driving performance, and today power-to-weight is what we have to focus on. The NSX was known for its aluminium body, so when we develop our new sportscar we don’t want to copy Ferrari for power, but to also chase efficiency as well,” the man added.

Previous reports say that the production NSX will be based on the HSV-010GT race car that competes in Super GT. Funnily, that racer was supposed to be the production car before the latter was canned!

If you’re skeptical, we don’t blame you. After all, the much anticipated new NSX has been on and off for a long time. A successor to the mid engined flagship was originally slated for a 2010 launch, but the plans were thrown out in December 2008 by ex Honda boss Takeo Fukui. Reasons include the global financial crisis as well as ever growing environmental concerns.

The Honda brand has always been linked to engineering and performance, but these days, they seem to be only interested in hybrids. Ito hears our cries, though, and has in place plans to change this.

“Our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case. We will address that impression with our new generations of cars.”

Those are comforting words for the legions of Honda fans who yearn for the good old days!

2012 Euro Honda Civic hatchback – first images revealed

Say hello to the latest iteration of the Euro Honda Civic which will be making its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Honda has just released the first few images of the hatchback following a teaser image that was shown late last month.

The 5-door which will hit European showrooms in early 2012 is said to offer better ride and handling, lower exhaust emissions as well as better interior quality. Honda also mentioned that the airy cabin and boot space has been retained as well.

According to Honda, the new Euro Civic’s design is inspired by a “blended wing body’ aeroplane in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body for superior aerodynamic performance, quietness and habitability”. What do you think of the design? Prefer its predecessor?

More details to come your way soon. Meanwhile you can find a high-res image gallery after the jump.
