Toyota Supra HV-R hybrid wins Tokachi 24-Hour

supra hybrid

The Tokachi 24-Hour Race recently saw a hybrid car come up tops for the first time. The Denso Toyota Supra HV-R uses a modified Super GT 3UZ-FE 4.5 litre engine that makes 480 PS at 6,800rpm and 510Nm at 5,600rpm.

The hybrid component consists of two in-wheel motors putting out 10 kilowatt (13hp) each at the front as well as a 150 kilowatt (200 horsepower) motor for the rear wheels. All that power combined with a vehicle weight of 1,080kg is a recipe for a rocket, that can run silent at times thanks to the electric motors.

The Supra HV-R uses energy regeneration to recharge a specially designed high capacity capacitor with a quick charging system instead of normal rechargeable batteries to keep up with a race’s repeated full-on acceleration and deceleration..

i bet this is a good technology for track use. utilising the electric motor would understress the petrol engine and be more efficient for endurance races.

kevin, endurance race engines when built correctly are supposed to take the stresses for racing and last the race distance. I think the only benefit they get from this is probably better fuel economy, meaning they make less fuel stops, therefore saving time. In endurance racing, the longer you can stay out on the track, the better.

But when hybrid cars come to malaysia, i believe the cars themselves will be expensive let alone the petrol we use today.

well makes sense since you take some load from petrol and let battery supply it.
