BMW 120i Coupe Performance Unlimited for Japan market

BMW has unveiled a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) special of the compact 120i Coupe Performance Unlimited which will have a limited run of 30 units. The package gives prospective customers the addition of the standard M-Sport package along with extra accessories.

Munich’s smallest coupe comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 170 hp and 210 Nm of torque mated to a six speed automatic gearbox. On the outside, the car gets a blacked-out grille, carbon fiber mirror caps, carbon fibre boot lid spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels, complemented by the standard M-Sport bumpers.

Inside you will find the regular M-Sport trim, seats and steering wheel along with the addition of an aluminium pedal set, leather gear knob and handbrake lever. The car is exclusively available in white or Le Mans Blue.

In Malaysia, the only 1-Series Coupe variant available is the 135i, which is powered by a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine with 306 bhp and 400 Nm. This pocket rocket, which we tested back in 2007, does 0-100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds on to a capped 250 km/h top speed.

the Japanese will still prefer fully imported models with left hand drive instead of this JDM series…

  • This is much better than the over-engined coupe model we have in Malaysia. In fact, the 1-series should be the entry model for the BMW range and retailed at the lowest possible price. Can’t understand why they would not want to put more 1-series coupes on the road.

In my personal opinion, the coupe looks a lot better than the hatch and should be offered with the same engine options as the hatch instead of the road tax heavy, fuel consumption heavy and insurance heavy 3.0L. It is high time that there is a REAL successor to the E21 and E30 2-door coupes. Small, Light, Fast… but not overkill!

agree that the 1-series should be the brand expander. no point having too big an engine as the target market will not be able to afford it. the 2.0 should be the entry level 1-series for all variants. it will also form a bigger base for bmw so that in future they will be upgraders to the 3-series. easier to catch them young and let them grow with the brand rather than use the 1-series as an extension car meaning the second car at home.

however, there should also be the large engine variant available for those who can afford it or just want an expensive toy… which also leads to bigger bragging rights like doing 0-100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds and on to a capped 250 km/h top speed.

there will also be those who say “i’d rather have the 135i”. true, but can they afford it? wouldn’t it be better if bmw offered the 120i coupe and make the journey to ownership less long and less painful? later on when there is more money in the pocket, the 120i coupe owner can either go 2 ways i) 3-series or ii) more powerful 1-series variant.

makes sense…..the 135i…just don’t see the logic in getting one. spend a little more and you can get a 335i which is more attractive to girls.

yeah man agree completely dude, you shud call up BMW personally and tell them they’re not doing any favours for themselves by introducing such stupidly expensive 1 -series models that are supposedly entry level.
      I hope yer listening BMW!!!
