Volkswagen recalls 228,000 cars in the US over potential fuel line hazard – 2006-2010 Golf, Jetta and Beetles affected

Volkswagen of America has issued a recall on more than 228,000 vehicles, and the list of cars includes 2006-2010 Rabbit (essentially, the Mk V Golf), Jetta and Beetle models as well as the 2009 2.5-litre Jetta Sportwagen.

The company says that on all of the recalled vehicles, with the exception of the Beetle, a small plastic tab in the windshield wiper fluid reservoir could chafe against a fuel supply line under the hood, leading to the possibility of a fuel leak and potential fire if chafing occurs.

For the Beetle, a fastening clamp on the hydraulic hose of the power steering system may be located in an improper position, again leading to the possibility of chafing an underhood fuel supply line, where a fuel leak and a fire could develop.

VW said its dealers will inspect and replace the underhood fuel line if necessary, and depending on the model, either remove the plastic tab from the windshield washer fluid reservoir or adjust the fastening clamp into the correct position. The company said there had been no reports of fires, crashes or injuries related to the issue.

imho, bolehland law doesn’t enforce “recall” policies… so many car maker skipped by saying parts used in car sold here are from different supplier so no need recall….

heard from friend(many) that their car maker(world renowned brand) invites them for “special FOC service” to check certain part(eg. airbag, O2 sensor, driveshaft, brake disc…)…. “special service programme…..”

its time for our law maker to enact a “recall” law in bolehland…. before being called “incompetent” somemore…. pathetic!

its common to have what they call “silent recalls”. this is usually done when the part needing rectification is not safety related or hinder the operation of the vehicle in a dangerous manner. All manufacturers in the world do it so, not just in Malaysia. But in the case of a safety item, or safety related item, an “open” recall must be done.

To me, its no surprise VW is so quick to do an open recall. I wouldnt be so naive as to say they love and care for their customers.. but this is the US we’re talking about. if anything even happens, VW could potentially face hundred if not thousands of lawsuits from customers and even the US govt, like how Toyota ran into trouble when they announced an open recall too late recently.

sorry to say, bolehland law are “too loose” for these auto manufacturer but they are weaker in US…

sigh… too much “incompetent” here already… its time to do a cleanup & “change blood”

Whether the law in a country is “loose” or not, DOES NOT matter for a big company like VW. They are more concerned on the reputational risks involved, as that can cause even more harm in the long run.
