Hyundai Blue2 Concept – it’s a hydrogen fuel-cell EV

It’s called the Blue2 concept, and it’s Hyundai’s first sedan-style Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) powered by hydrogen. The Blue2 (as in “Blue square”) gets its name from a combination of Hyundai’s sub eco-brand ‘Blue Drive’ and the number `2′ from H2, the symbol for hydrogen gas.

Officially designated the HND-6, the mid-size FCEV is powered by a fuel cell electric system that delivers a stack power of 90 kW (1.65 kW/L), and the company says that the car returns a fuel economy of 34.9 km/l.

Plenty of eco-friendly features to be found in this one – it’s equipped with low-resistance tires and alloy wheels which are designed to improve aerodynamic performance, while the interior design continues on the eco-friendly theme with the use of relevant materials.

The ‘Intersected Flow’ design language exterior features some novel takes – LED screen panels located on both the front and rear of the car displays images (neat way to do licence plates, you think?), and there’s also a welcome system which recognises the driver, while an automatic opening door system and side cameras – to replace the conventional side mirrors – as well as a roof camera makes for additional tech.

The exterior designs flow inside the vehicle, with asymmetrically-designed dashboards and doors on call. The cabin also features wider seats to enable more comfortable ingress and egress. Elsewhere, there’s a cluster ionizer to keep the air fresh, while antibacterial genuine leather with leaf-shaped patterns, called ‘eco-graphic perforation,’ continues on the eco-friendly tone to a T.

The meter cluster and centre fascia have been combined, and it’s all presented in a display featuring an advanced Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode (TOLED) monitor and ultra-light tempered glass, called Gorilla Glass. Last but not least, the infotainment system is operated by a Motion Sensor Moustick, a haptic wheel and motion sensor that responds to the driver’s touch and hand movements respectively.

The car looks a little too front-heavy, and the rear looks a little 90s-era Toyota. Sorry, but I’ve seen better eco-friendly concepts, even from Hyundai itself.

    34.9 km/l?! Biar betul.. my ’96 iswara goes 90km/RM10 (of RON95), my friend’s new Alza goes 90km/RM10. If 34.9 km/l, that’d mean this Blue2, if produced, can go 183km with just rm10!!

I’m not surprised if it did.

Afterall, MPG ratings for Hybrids now are up to 60MPG (25km/L) and even better with the new diesel hybrids expected to get closer to or exceed 30km/L. Even the current production run Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel’d car can get up to 30km/L…and this is basically only 1st generation fuel cell.

Now the thing is, 34.9km/L of what? I assume is Petrol equivalent

Your RM$10 is moot point though, you are assuming you can buy the same amount of hydrogen for what petrol cost……and remember hydrogen has less energy content per L (or weight). Same situation with the E85 Bio-ethanol fuels currently available. Same L, less mileage.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells is our ZERO EMISSION future :)…!!!!!

    • its technology marvel…still zero emission not totally true…it oso produce pollution albeit it less but not zero…if there is chemical reaction there is a waste even h2 and o2 reaction that poduce water…n one thing where do you think they get H2 from? From wat i know hydrogen production mostly come from petroleum, lttle bit from cows, from other chemical reaction…from water? That u need to find out

that emblem is sexy….though the normal ‘H’ is sexy enough….
this is one of the best design car…even that so called alfa Romeo can go home….this is what I call styling and design!!!
ppl should really consider this than buying those overpriced Audi/Beemer/Benz…even simple car like this from Hyundai already looks grand enough….

    • You call this design that are better than Alfas? Laugh My Ass Off. Alfas are extraodinary beautiful whereas this one is…well, quite interesting but the design is not original. Every automotive enthusiast will know that the design is similar to new 508. It’s not suprising as it’s a korean car. I’m not saying the design is bad but having o say that this is better than Alfa is a little offensive if I can say that.

  • Hyundai cars are getting better and better (other than their superior ship building skills, electronics, IT and etc).

As for our ‘pride’ national car aka ‘jaguh kampung’ aka ‘tin milo’ from Tanjung Malim (should be nicknamed as Tanjung Milo), I wonder, what is their take on this 34.9km/L Blue2 engine? Turbocharged Campro? Puny (tiny) engine of ‘Emas’ cars (I wouldn’t even called this car Gangsa or Perak either). Heck, Protong has a very long way to go and they better wake up from their bad habits of ma*turbation. Again it has been 25 long years.

Cant say much, as a designer..with this kind of stroke and shape..i would say this is.. ‘Either You Like it or You Hate it’ design class..same class with Alfa-Romeo & SAAB design cues..
