Petronas extends Mercedes partnership to DTM series

Petronas extends Mercedes partnership to DTM series

National oil and gas company Petronas is already the proud partner of the Silver Arrows, and now both companies are taking their relationship into the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) series, which begins this Sunday in Hockenheim.

The Petronas logo will be displayed on the overalls and helmets of all nine Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers, as well as on their AMG Mercedes C-Class cars. Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 3 partner teams Mücke Motorsport and Prema Powerteam will also feature Petronas branding on their Dallara Mercedes F3 racing cars.

Petronas extends Mercedes partnership to DTM series

It’s more than just stickers, though. As with the Formula 1 team, Petronas motor oils have been specially formulated to meet the unique demands of DTM racing. With piston velocities of over 35 m/s and valve pressures of over 9,000 kg/cm², the 4.0-litre V8 (with 500 Nm and “around 493 hp”) powering the wicked looking C-Class is an extreme environment to work in, and the special Syntium engine oil with integrated additives plays a big role in keeping things running.

“The fact that Petronas has extended its involvement from Formula 1, with our Silver Arrows team, to the DTM emphasises the growing importance of this series. Just as in Formula 1, the research and development work done by our partners at Petronas makes an invaluable contribution to the competitiveness of our cars,” said Norbert Haug, VP of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

Petronas should also bring the DTM series to Malaysia, a special round outside Germany perhaps just like the Japan Super GT.

Good thinking by Petronas. This will give them additonal exposure and also marketing clout for their products. If Germans are using Petronas products for their race cars in their homeland races, then the quality of Petronas products is unquestionable.

Of course we have narrow minded people in our own homeland who love to put down Petronas for their own crazy reasons.

Malaysia will host the festival of automotive extreme tuners,
DTM Germany vs Super GT Japan in year 2012

before this PETRONAS sponsored the DTM festival for DTM Shanghai, China.

News are out that the rule makers and manufacturers of Germany’s DTM and Japanese Super GT are collaborating to commonise their regulation. Should this go through as many as 6 makers would be involved instead of the current 2 (Audi & Mercedes) and 3 Japanese makes of GT500; Toyota, Nissan & Honda, would be involved. The sixth is non other than BMW, who are being more disenchanted with the WTCC. Originally it was thought, Australia’s V8 Supercars and America’s Grand-Am series were involved as well.

Germany’s ITR, DTM’s righholders and Japan’s JAF have already progressed further with their discussions and drafts of the proposed regulations have come out:

    – Common carbon monocoque with roll cage
    – Wheelbase of 2850 mm
    – Common front and rear overhang
    – Common front spoiler and rear diffuser
    – V8 engine of yet to be announced size
    – Limited number of engines during season
    – Introduction of “design line” where on one side all cars are common
    – 51% cost reduction compared to current DTM regulations

meanwhile BMW agree to compete in DTM in year 2012 with at least 6 race cars
official news from DTM website : http://www.dtm.com/newsausgabe.php?id=9778

it is expected official announcement will be made soon, as this is still in the stage of discussions between so may parties involved.
