Jatco introduces CVT8 and CVT8 Hybrid transmissions

Jatco introduces CVT8 and CVT8 Hybrid transmissionsJatco has announced a new continuously variable transmission for midsize and large front-wheel drive vehicles, offering an improvement of 10% in fuel economy compared to earlier models.

Designed for application with 2.0 to 3.5 litre engined vehicles, the CVT 8 features a ratio spread of 7.0:1, which is around 15% higher than current models. Friction is 40% down for the unit, which features Adaptive Shift Control as part of the kit.

The new ratio has been obtained by combining smaller shaft diameter pulleys with a new and differently shaped belt, which is flatter, and the range of ratios between the two pulleys has been expanded with only minimally increased axial distance.

Elsewhere, a more compact oil pump, the use of specially formulated low viscosity oil and an interface increase between the pulleys and the belt – to reduce neccessary oil pressure – as well as modification to 60% of the component parts have translated to the lowered friction.

The CVT8 is to be introduced next year, debuting in vehicles in North America, and will be built in both Mexico and Japan. The company has also announced the CVT8 Hybrid, developed in conjuction with Nissan. The system incorporates an electric motor and two clutches into the unit, offering a compact, versatile powertrain that does not require a specially designed body. Nissan plans to release a new hybrid vehicle with this system in the US in 2013.

With CVT being employed for the Altis after a successful run in the Estima as well as Nissan’s JATCO derived CVTs for the Teana and Sylphy, these 2 brands are surely gonna introduce more models with CVT boxes. Honda might make a return once they’ve rectified their CVT box.

Proton also joined the bandwagon, anyone knows if ours was adopted from Mitsubishi?

Proton Saga FLX with CVT : I got one.
I am new to CVT but notice it is different from normal auto transmission.
It feels as though it give FLX a good acceleration from standstill.
Mine still very new (just 1k km only) and it is a bit tight.
Meaning at low speed once i let go of accelerator, the engine rev down but cvt gear not responding fast enough so it jerks but after that it is smooth.. very smooth – no sign of gear change.. he he

Other than the noise from engine and transmission Saga FLX is a good 1st car to own. Not yet drive at highway speed limit.. so no further comment.

        cheers

Honda will definitely return to use CVT. They had just annouced that from next year onward they will have better designed CVT that delivers optimal driving efficiency, and this will be used across all Honda models to replace its outdated 5 speed Auto, including Accord as well.

That’s great if it’s true, use CVTs as soon as possible to maximise efficiency!!

wahhh everybody so enthusiastic la to have a CVT transmission. Wait la when one of you ask how much is the cost of replacing your CVT transmission when it goes kaput and you are going to faint right there and then at the service counter.

Friction 40% down meaning overheat problem also reduce at the same time. Good job!

    • “the use of specially formulated low viscosity oil…”

Let’s wait till you see the price of maintaining such gb.

      Technical wise still very good.

Nissan uses jatco cvt, a spinoff company from Nissan. On some website, they mentioned that our current Lancer also uses Jatco CVT… Similar to those like Slyphy…

Lately CVT has garnered a lot of interest especially when it comes to fuel eficiency. However, the usage of belt means it has a certain lifespan before replacement. Even the normal AT slushbox has it’s own lifespan. But manufacturers do not provide info like how many years of usage or milleage before it requires servicing/replacement. Anyone know what the durability of CVT transmission? If not, at least share info like how’s the durability compared to normal AT slushbox?

That is great, I love CVTs, use it for most new cars and maximise fuel efficiency and minimise emissions :)…!!!
