SPYSHOT: Honda Brio and Mobilio spotted in Malaysia

Honda-Brio-Mobilio-Malaysia

The Honda Brio and Mobilio have been spotted in Malaysia, together. This pic was sent in by reader Muhd Izat Hadi, who said he saw the cars this morning at the Sungai Buloh R&R area.

Now, the first line of thought for most is that these Hondas are coming to Malaysia. But that’s not happening – the Brio has been around for some time in Thailand and Indonesia, but it’s harder to make a case for a budget car with a foreign badge here, especially when it has to be very cheap to fight Perodua’s offerings.

B2640A trade plate on Brio belongs to Proton, which has been seen testing a white Brio before

To confirm that it’s not Honda Malaysia, we looked into our spyshot archive and found the trade plate number B2640A on a pre-production Proton Iriz test mule. In fact, Proton has been snapped testing a Brio before and this could be the same white unit.

As to why Proton is testing the Brio now, your guess is as good as ours. The national carmaker is currently working with Suzuki, and the first joint product will be a compact car, so the Brio could be a reference point.

The Mobilio? A budget MPV could be in the works. Suzuki has a Mobilio and Avanza fighter called the Ertiga – could that be part of Proton’s plans as well? Both the Brio and Mobilio share the same platform, and Proton could even be studying platform sharing.

How come Suzuki can sell the Alto at 40K & Hyundai & Kia can sell the i10/Picanto at 50K? Brio is an A-segmenter too.

Honda don’t want to sell the Brio here because when this car comes, habis nobody wants to buy City etc – where they’re making huge margins.

    Finally…

But, Brio in the picture could be a stripped down spec. It lacks rear wiper, unlike Indonesia & Thailand.

When I saw the photo, I immediately thought “Proton’s benchmarking maybe ?”. And the trade plate confirms it, great work guys.

The Mobilio is actually the MPV version of the Brio, and seeing that Proton had previously benchmarked the Iriz against the Brio, could Proton be benchmarking an ‘Iriz MPV’ against the Mobilio ? Time will tell.
