It’s getting close to the Frankurt Motor Show, and things are liable to get a bit frenetic soon. So, let’s begin with probably the first teaser of many. Volkwagen has just released two sketches of the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, which surfaced via Auto Motor und Sport in Germany.

Just to recap, the new Tiguan will be larger than the previous PQ35 platform-based model and it will be based on the brand’s MQB platform, which will allow it to shed around 100 kg. Based on these latest sketches, we can see that the new Tiguan certainly has some styling cues from the VW Touareg and CrossBlue Concept.

This second-generation compact crossover is expected to have a range of TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines under the hood. Perhaps a 1.8 litre TSI petrol and 2.0 litre TDI power plant could be in the offing, and an ‘R’ variant engine type with almost 300 hp may also be in the pipeline, along with a petrol-hybrid GTE model too.

Interestingly, this vehicle will have a variant with seven seats, and the three-row model will be built in Mexico, with production slated to begin by the end of 2016 in order to be ready for an introduction in 2017. This extended-wheelbase Tiguan will be for the North and South American markets, as well as other countries, excluding Europe and China.
