Suzuki unveils all-new Baleno, sales in Europe by 2016

Suzuki Baleno Frankfurt 17

Suzuki unveiled its all-new Baleno in Frankfurt. Made in India by Maruti Suzuki, the series production version of Geneva 2015’s iK-2 concept will begin selling in Europe in the spring of 2016.

The Japanese automaker says that it set out to create a hatchback with better technology in a smart packaging and make it fun to drive, and that the Baleno – which measures in at 3,995 mm long, 1,745 mm wide and 1,470 mm tall, with a 2,520 mm-long wheelbase – perfectly embodies all the elements expected in a car of this size.

New tech to the car is made up of a new-gen platform, a 1.0 litre Boosterjet direct-injection turbo engine and a Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SVHS) mild hybrid system. Body rigidity is up by around 10%, while total vehicle weight has been reduced by approximately 15%.

The 1.0 litre K10C DITC mill produces 110 hp at 5,500 rpm and has a maximum torque of 170 Nm from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm, and is available to be paired with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The automaker says the unit achieves greater fuel economy and provides more driving pleasure by using a small displacement, high torque turbocharger.I

The Baleno is also available with a 1.2 Dualjet, a dual-injection petrol engine with improved thermal efficiency, creates a balance between performance and fuel efficiency. This power plant can also be paired with the five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The SHVS mild hybrid system, meanwhile, is available with the 1.2 Dualjet and uses an ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) which assists the engine during acceleration and generate electricity during braking.

Exterior-wise, European customers will have nine body colours to choose from, and there’s a choice between 15-inch and 16-inch alloy wheels too. Inside, elements include a high-definition colour LCD display which shows driving G-force, engine output and torque, accelerator/brake operation and, if so equipped, energy flow for the SHVS.

There’s also a Smartphone Linkage Audio Display with a seven-inch touch panel screen as well as Apple CarPlay and Mirrorlink support. As for luggage carrying capacity, the boot offers 355 litres of cargo space.

Safety kit includes ESP, six airbags and Radar Brake Support. With the latter, if the vehicle is travelling faster than 5 km/h, millimeter wave radar can detect potential collisions by alerting the driver, increasing braking force or automatically apply the brakes.

Are you OK? Why must Proton bring in? Why not Suzuki direct? Proton is a car dealer i presume.

Another space cadet who lost the plot.. Proton and Suzuki has signed agreements in which Proton will use Suzuki platforms for some market segments

Exactly. As proven with the Mitsubishi and Honda tie-ups; where Proton did such a good job with modifying the Lancer drivetrain with a CVT and less bhp than the original. Suzuki has no interest in tying up with a unrespected inefficent car maker. Proton is just going to rebadge and be a glorified dealer as usual. So full of national pride with our Proton.

Proton didn’t do anything to modify the Lancer powertrain. Mitsubishi didn’t allow it. In fact, Inspira was built under supervision of Mitsubishi’s Japanese engineers right here in Malaysia.

Not sure why bashers like you are continuously not using your brains. Is the Saga rebadged? How about Persona? Is the Exora a rebadge? Preve? Suprima? Is the Campro CFE a rebadged engine? Proton may have made a stupid decision to go with Punch CVT, but did they nick the CFE + CVT combo off any other manufacturer?

Their cars may still be below par but they’re not cheating or lying their way through. It’s a free market, and as we can see, Perodua is selling way more than Proton although Perodua is more expensive and has less safety features and technology. Perodua is furthermore an outright rebadger.

And yet, idiots only know how to bash Proton. No wonder Malaysia is still a backward country with crappy human capital.

The length, width and wheelbase measurements put this squarely in Saga territory. Proton will need to widen and lengthen it to turn it into a Persona.

Anyway, the Savvy was widened and lengthened to turn it into a Saga BLM and the end result was good, with hardly any resemblance to the Savvy..

      • Toyota rebadged BRZ becum 86. No pride swallowed.
So even if P1 collaborate with Suzuki, no pride will be swallowed.

        • it is because Toyota put effort with Subaru to design 86 and BRZ.

Toyota owns FHI, being the highest stake holders. FHI owns Subaru.

Interesting concept. Maruti Suzuki, so you know they are aiming for a sub-10k USD car for developing markets. Mild-hybrid, super-efficient 1.0 with 110bhp. For <10k usd.

Oh. But I live in Malaysia. I need to buy rebadged 10-year old drivetrain technology for RM100k. Because national pride. So proud.

    • U r paying 100k for 10 year old tech not cuz of national pride. Its cuz u only listen to Sam Loo high RV shit. Please look to Proton Iriz,Preve,Suprima, Exora bold, or if u hav money get Honda.

  • Rather than rebadge, why not P1 and Suzuki collaborate to turn it into a sedan. Lengthen the wheelbase a bit and name it Persona MK2. And keep all the safety and kit in. This will be the final nail for UMW toyota shit.
