2016 KTM RC390 update – new exhaust, ride-by-wire

Some significant changes have been made to KTM’s middle-weight sportsbike, the 2016 RC 390. The model updates to the RC 390 were made with an eye on improving ride comfort, as well as bringing the single-cylinder sportsbike under Euro 4 compliance.

The biggest change has been made to the exhaust, which now exits on the right in the conventional manner, instead of being tucked away inside the fairing belly-pan. Ride-by-wire is also standard for the 2016 KTM RC 390, which will improve engine tractability, along with a slipper clutch that eliminates rear-wheel ‘hop’ and ‘chatter’ during hard down-shifts.

Feedback from KTM’s racing efforts has also seen the front brake disc go to 320 mm, from 300 mm, which will give the RC 390 more stopping power. Other changes made to improve rider ergonomics are a seat with more padding, adjustable levers and larger rear-view mirrors.

The KTM RC 390 has a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled 373.2 cc engine fed by EFI. There is no change in the engine for 2016, with power remaining at 44 hp, and dry weight at 147 kg. The current model (pre-update) 2016 KTM RC 390 retails for RM27,200, including GST.

  • Anyone owns a KTM 390?
Care to share the user experience?
I am also interested to know the reliability and after sales and parts of this brand. It seems the reputation is less then sterling in this area.

I have own duke 390,almost same drivetrain. My honest opinion, this bike is superb. Very agile, not fast but enough to make u smile and perfect for daily commuter. 78k km mileage with normal oil change and without any valve clearance check, the problem I have encountered only fork oil seal leaking once and repair done rm30 only, dats all. The cons is, slow maneuvering (abt 20-30kmh), need to use clutch as the engine stutter a lot..so far, im satisfied with it..

      • Thank you for sharing.

Sounds positive to me and I take it as given another chance, you will gladly buy it again?

I don’t know anyone that owns it, only hear people comment on the perceived reliability and support compare to Jap bike.

I don’t need a very fast bike. And I doubt I will ever get above 50k km ever. But reliability and easy maneuvering in city are very important to me.

Yamaha MT07 is another bike I am looking at. Is somewhat a different class due to the cc. But it looks very good to me.

How’s the bike coping with the excruciating engine heat, and most of all, how are you coping with the heat in the traffic? Is it true that the RC390 has less overheating issues as compared to its naked duke counterpart do to the extra fairing?

        • what Neo4g63t is pretty much true. mine has no overheating issue after changing to Engine Ice coolant. great light bike with ample of power and easy to maneuver. zero to 130 kph in around 10 sec. if you want a highway cruiser, this is not for you. get a higher cc bike ie brutale, ktm690, etc. cheers, rgd mkz :)

Dont buy it if you dont go to track. Going around traffic is a pain in the ass and the engine heats a lot. And you will suffer from back, neck, wrist pains for the first few months until you are accustomed with it. The price here in India is less than half of what is being sold in Malaysia.

  • can anyone tell me why bike manufacturers are going with ride by wire now?

    • Because that allows cruise control, traction control and variable power modes

Also, the engine design (single large piston) is part of the factor that pushes KTM to use DBW even in the 250s.

    • What’s wrong in embracing new tech? Or u still prefer cable-based like Honda C70 ? :P

Powerful engine require precise control, and that’s where the RbW comes in play. And literally almost zero maintenance on the throttle cable.
