Faulty brakes caused bus to ram into 10 cars on NSE

The runaway bus that rammed into ten cars on the downhill stretch near the North-South Expressway’s Menora Tunnel had faulty brakes, according to The Star. The incident, which happened 2.45pm yesterday afternoon on the already packed southbound lane, caused a massive traffic jam from the Kuala Kangsar exit to Jelapang, and from Bukit Gantang to Bukit Berapit.

Ipoh OCPD assistant commissioner Sum Chang Keong said investigations found that the rogue bus, which was heading south from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, experienced a technical problem when it was travelling down a slope.

“The brakes weren’t functioning well. As a result, the bus headed down the slope at high speed and rammed into 10 other cars in front,” he said, adding that a 21-year-old girl, a passenger in one of the cars that were hit, suffered pain in the stomach area. “No one was seriously injured in the incident,” ACP Sum said.

The 51-year old bus driver from Johor was remanded this morning to assist in investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving. His urine test returned negative for drugs.

At least the bus drivers use 10 cars instead of 1 car for his braking, else you will see milo tin crashed with deaths. Proton Saga BLM only score 1 star in ASEANCAP.

That bus driver was driving on the (right ) fast lane. Brake is just an EXCUSE. If he was driving on the slow (left) lane, he would have hit the drain and the video would have shown otherwise. He was not adhering to the speed limit. If brake is still an excuse, then somebody was napping during puspakom inspection.

Theres one white van avoided the bus by changing to the left lane and then stopped. Good awareness by the driver. I always look at my rear view mirror when going down hill in case of runaway vehicles like this.

When you just joined the jam always look in the rearview mirror on the expectation there’s a high chance you will be rear-ended.

    “roque” bus? You mean “rogue”?

Bullshit stories again and again. These express buses will always be speeding at 130-140km/h. When they end up causing accidents and crashing, the story is always “faulty brakes”. Bus drivers, like truck drivers, are liable for the injuries and deaths that they cause. There should be 20 year jail terms for drivers of heavy vehicles that cause accidents.

the authority should set the speed limit on all buses to maximum 60kph electronically or mechanically to minimize casualties.

China has an electronic system to monitor how fast a bus is driving and how long the driver had been behind the wheel. They even called the bus driver to warn him that he is exceeding the permissible driving period without taking a break.

The problem with Malaysia is no enforcement l

    All too familiar

Faulty breaks, drug influenced driver, badly maintained heavy vehicles

These excuses will pop out when these catastrophes happened regularly, and yet the authorities would not bat an eyelid to fix these issues. With proper enforcement, these can be avoided or minimize to smaller number of cases (10 accident cases reduced to 1-2 cases as a result of human error) and save the lives of many users on the road in Malaysia.

But sadly, as we all know it, Malaysian lives are cheap. 2 Airbags? Malaysians celebrate like kena lottery, car with VSC? Wow, expensive technology.. safety has never cross the mind of Malaysian road users… anything bad happen, just takdir tuhan la

Not sure if it’s federal or state law, but in Adelaide a truck driver died because of faulty brakes due to negligence by the truck company to maintain the vehicle.

This was brought to the court as a case of manslaughter and the boss of the truck company was found guilty and sentenced to more than 12 years in jail.

In bolehland, if a minister kin passed away at the dentist, then it is an issue. If the bus hit the dentist who has no relationship with any minister then, just coffee shop talk.

did driver been taught that if ever Brakes failed, try down shift a gear to slow speed and next gear…

If only there a active black box recorded this accident, then investigator can easily identify root cause…. I mean other than “speeding”….

Do you all know that the buses and lorries using air brake system?
It will be much difference between those braking system in our normal driving cars/bikes.
The buses and lorries will need to buildup the air pressure before they can use their brakes.

Analytical review : The bus operator had braked the bus numerous times as you can see the downhill heavy traffic in the video. Therefore air pressure in the reservoir depleted and causes the bus uncontrollable thus ramming into the cars infront.

Prevention step : Disallowed the bus/lorry operation during the peak hour

  • Right, madness or crazy to drive a ” rogue ” bus which in the first place if when was the last inspection and was it carried out. How is/ was of the driver ‘s track record ? Fortunately , no casuality and if there was/ were would take another turn. High time of one many that today ok and with time forget to forgot. Time to gear up a d seriously to tackle to resolve. Action, not talk only.
