Ferrari will team up with longtime design, engineering and software partner Altair Product Design to develop the Italian carmaker’s next-generation vehicle platform. In an Automotive News report, the new platform will be base for several new flagship models.

According to Altair, the company’s partnership with Ferrari stretched back to more than a decade, and its designers and engineers will work alongside Ferrari’s design, engineering and manufacturing teams at the carmaker’s vehicle development centre in Italy to create the platform.

The next-generation platform is said to be is 15% lighter, and boasts improvements to crash, noise, vibration and harshness, as well as other performance qualities by more than 20%. Furthermore, the modular platform would help Ferrari cut development time and allow more models within its line-up to share parts.

Royston Jones, Altair Product Design’s global chief technology officer, said the platform’s “massive deployment of structural optimization” and “optimum material layout” will result in “outstanding weight/performance characteristics.” The first Ferrari to utilise this platform could be the next-generation California, and is predicted to be unveiled sometime next year.

New modular platform only makes sense when they have more volume or models.

I smell new Ferrari sedan, maybe even an MPV in the works.

    LOL.

I’m no Ferrari fan but doesn’t making a “modular” sports car seem to cheapen its “bespoke” credentials?

I agree. What happened to their in-house expertise that makes them unique?
