Volkswagen has announced that it is recalling around 30,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Europe in order to replace their gas bottle tanks. The automaker said the measure was being carried out because the tanks cannot be properly checked for corrosion, Reuters reports.
The company said that affected models are certain Caddy, Passat and Touran vehicles produced between 2006 to 2010 running, and the tanks on these are to be replaced free of charge. It said the replacement of the tanks were being carried out because regular inspection of gas tanks may not have been carried out in certain EU countries, but didn’t specify which countries, the report added.
The automaker said that the underfloor CNG tanks are exposed to external influences. This creates the risk that in some of these vehicles a damaged outer casing no longer provides the necessary protection from corrosion, and ongoing corrosion results in a continual reduction in the thickness of the wall. If the residual wall is too thin, that can lead to a gas tank bursting.
In July, the company had recalled around 5,900 Touran EcoFuel models for the same reason. Volkswagen said the problem was detected during internal tests and has already been rectified in current production.
