Toyota Vios hatch, Yaris L sedan debut at Guangzhou

Leaked last month, the covers have finally been pulled off the Toyota Vios FS hatch and the Yaris L sedan at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show. The new variants expand the Vios and Yaris L ranges in China, which were hitherto only available in sedan and hatchback bodystyles respectively.

Until now, Toyota’s strategy for the Chinese B-segment market was simple. The Vios sedan was built and sold through its joint venture with GAC, while the hatchback counterpart, the Yaris L (the one that is also sold in ASEAN markets), is available via FAW Toyota Motor. Evidently, however, both companies want a slice of each other’s pie, hence the development of these two cars.

Essentially, each one gets the other’s front fascia. On the Vios hatch, there’s the redesigned face first seen on the facelifted sedan at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year. Reshaped headlights are linked to a new T-shaped upper grille.

Meanwhile a wider lower grille integrates the front fog lights and are flanked by vertical LED daytime running lights. The rear is unchanged from the facelifted Yaris L, with LED tail lights carrying slimmer indicators, plus a redesigned bumper.

The Yaris L sedan, on the other hand, gains the polarising front end seen on the facelifted hatch, albeit thankfully without the black mask that makes it look like it has a moustache. It’s still not what you’d call handsome, however, thanks to the multitude of contours and grilles. Again, the rear end is unchanged from the revised Vios sedan, with new LED tail lights and reprofiled rear bumper.

Both cars are powered by the same 99 hp 1.3 litre and 107 hp 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i engines as the Vios sedan and Yaris L hatch, matched to either a five-speed manual or a CVT with a virtual seven-speed mode.

China now get everything. Toyota also kowtow to China. Toyota Japan also know, Toyota sales in Malaysia is dwindling and soon will be such a small market.

What do you expect? UMW is a GLC. So, sleep during work hours is normal. So no productivity.

The Vios/Yaris hatchback will be a welcome fresh challenge to the dominant Honda Jazz in M’sia. Am sure M’sia is big enough a market for this Yaris HB.

UMW, please bring it on to M’sia. When there is competition, there will be improvement in quality & price.

Look more executive and matured than horrible Malaysia version Vios.Since we Malaysian is so childish and being grumpy all the time we don’t deserve more options.Just buy whatever design they produce as long it is sushi.Sigh! Honda more understand local requirements which is performance, reliability and sleek design that’s why they will be crown King Of Foreign Manufacturer for the 3rd consecutive years.Driving a Toyota might let people think I’m a spoilt brat drive old daddy’s car.Perception is vital in these current social judgement, apparently.

Still the same 1.5 litre engine?

What? An engine that made its debut in 2003.
Using same 13 years old engine.

Toyota will continue to piss customers off.

Yeah right, reliability bullshit with proven engine. Garbage. Hope it reflects in your sales.
