FIRST LOOK: 2017 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled and Cafe Racer – 803 cc V-twin, 73 hp, 67 Nm, RM68,999

Expanding its Scrambler range of retro-bikes for 2017, Ducati has issued the Scrambler Desert Sled and Scrambler Cafe Racer, identically priced at RM68,999, including GST. Espousing two very different design philosophies for the same engine and chassis, the Desert Sled is closer to the scrambler name, while the Cafe Racer harks back to the race bikes of the sixties.

The Desert Sled and Cafe Racer both carry the same 803 cc, air-cooled, Desmodromic two-valve engine that has seen service in one form or another in various Ducati models since the 1970s. Fuelling is by EFI with 50 mm throttle bodies, with the venerable V-twin putting out 73 hp at 8,250 rpm and 67 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm.

Standing tall is the Desert Sled, with 200 mm of suspension travel at both ends, suspended by 46 mm fully adjustable upside-down forks in front and Kayaba rear shock that is pre-load and rebound adjustable. Seat height for the Desert Sled is 860 mm, with wet weight at 207 kg and fuel carried in a 13.5-litre tank.

On the sporty side of things is the Cafe Racer, which carries a racing plate with the number 54, a call-out to racer Bruno Spaggiari’s racing number, used when he campaigned the Mototemporada Romagnola Italian road race in 1968 with a Ducati 350 cc single. Decked out in a classic looking black and gold finish, the Cafe Racer comes with a rear seat cowl that can be removed to accommodate a pillion.

Seat height on the Cafe Racer is set at 790 mm, and wet weight is claimed to be 188 kg, while suspension is by Kayaba, with only the rear shock adjustable for pre-load. Brembo does braking on single discs for both Scrambler variants, the Cafe Racer gets a proper Brembo M4-32 Monobloc radially-mounted caliper, while the Desert Sled makes do with a standard Brembo item, and ABS is standard.
