Remember Shelby SuperCars? The Washington-based firm famed for its Ultimate Aero TT that broke the road car top speed record in 2007 (Bugatti’s Veyron Super Sport took over in 2010) has gone quiet for some time now, but a comeback is being planned.
Back in 2011, SSC previewed the Tuatara. Designed by ex-Pininfarina and Bertone man Jason Castriota (the Ferrari 599 and stunning Saab Aero-X concept are in his portfolio), the SSC Tuatara was planned with a 6.9 litre twin-turbo V8 engine pumping out 1,350 hp. The motor would channel all that to the rear wheels via a seven-speed manual gearbox, and SSC spoke of carbon construction and a 444 km/h top speed.
A design prototype made it to Pebble Beach, but not to production. Funding issues, some say. However, the SSC recently revived its dormant website and social media pages with the teaser image you see above. Does “the evolution is coming” mean that the SSC Tuatara will be finally out, in an evolved form to take on today’s hypercar establishment? Time will tell if this is real or another false dawn.
