A single image of the Mercedes-AMG ‘GT4’ four-door model is now circulating online, and the low-res image appears to be authentic. The production car will make its debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show this week.
The car you see above matches what we’ve seen so far, from the masked official teasers and spyshots. However, compare it with the latest official teaser images from AMG below, and you’ll see some differences, which point to the car above being the high performance version or even a fully decked out “Edition 1”. It has a fixed rear wing, seven twin-spoke rims (versus multi spokes) and additional flics on the side of the front bumpers.
According to Autocar, the Mercedes-AMG four-door will be launched with the 612 PS/850 Nm 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 from the latest E63S 4Matic, along with the hot W213’s nine-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive system.
The UK mag adds that Mercedes officials have said there are plans for hybrid powertrains from 2019, and speculates that the an e-motor will take things past 800 hp in what could be an R model, like today’s GT R coupe. The range topper will also have 50 km of electric range. There will also be lower powered hybrid variants with shorter EV range, depending on battery size, it is said.
The report’s sources say that the hybrid powertrain consists of AMG’s 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 up front and an e-motor integrated with the rear axle. While the engine can send power to front and rear, the motor exclusively supplies the rear wheels. The system is modular and could feature in the next two-door AMG GT.
Not long now till this Porsche Panamera-rivalling beast is fully revealed. Stay tuned.
