V177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan – market launch at end-2018, same wheelbase as hatchback, 0.22 Cd

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed that the new A-Class Sedan (codenamed V177) will go on sale at the end of 2018, a model that differs from the A-Class L Sedan that was launched in China just a few months ago.

The main difference involves the wheelbase, with the version without the ‘L’ sharing the same figure as the A-Class hatchback – 2,729 mm as opposed to the long-wheelbase model’s 2,789 mm. As a reference, the A-Class L Sedan measures 4,609 mm long, 1,796 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall, which is 190 mm longer and 20 mm taller than the standard hatchback – width is unchanged.

While the German carmaker isn’t too keen on giving out the full list of dimensions (for now), it is willing to talk about the A-Class Sedan’s aerodynamics. It boasts that its new compact sedan has the lowest drag coefficient (Cd) value of any production vehicle worldwide at 0.22 and a frontal area of just 2.19 square metres.

Thanks to computation loops, CAE simulations (computer-aided engineering) and measurements in the wind tunnel in Sindelfingen, the company has been able to optimise the car for better aero. Details include the sealing of the headlamp surroundings as well as almost complete panelling of the underbody (engine bay, floorpan, parts of the rear axle and the diffuser).

In other areas, the wheels and tyres also underwent aerodynamic fine-tuning, plus an optional two-part shutter system behind the radiator grille is available as well. These features, Mercedes claims, help the car achieve a drag area of just 0.49 square metres.

Away from the aero talk, the company also adds that the A-Class Sedan will share a lot in common with the hatchback, including the engine line-up, safety and driver assistance systems, along with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. This is with the added benefit of more rear headroom that Mercedes claims is at the top of its segment.

The A-Class Sedan was developed in Sindelfingen, Germany and will be built in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Rastatt, Germany. How many of you will prefer this to the hatchback?
