Earlier this year, it was reported that Mercedes-AMG will be christening its flagship GT model with the Black Series moniker, and it will apparently be debuting in 2020. By then, the AMG GT would be six years old, which means the Black Series model might be the car’s swan song before its successor comes along.

This camouflaged unit of the AMG GT R was spotted by our spy photographers, but visually, there’s no changes apart from the twin-stacked exhaust pipes. Apparently, the engine and exhaust also sound louder than normal, which means that the prototype could be packing a meaner punch than the current range of AMG GT.

Going by Black Series models in the past, one can expect more power – the M178 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 used in the GT R makes 585 PS and 700 Nm of torque, but will likely be further increased for the GT Black Series.

Given the fact that the GT 4-Dour Coupe did not come with the 805-hp hybrid powertrain like that fitted on the GT Concept, we could possibly see an electrified version of the AMG V8 being used in the GT Black Series. “The next Black Series done from the GT must be something really surprising,” AMG boss Tobias Moers stated.
