2019 Michelin Pilot Street 2 tyre launched at Sepang

In the growing small displacement motorcycle and scooter market in South-east Asia, tyre choice is becoming more important as riders become more knowledgeable and demand greater performance for the money they spend. For Michelin, this need is answered with the 2019 Pilot Street 2, replacing the outgoing Pilot Street.

Coming in a new silica blend, Michelin claims the Pilot Street 2 gives better wet weather performance along with longer tyre life, depending on riding conditions and style. The tread pattern on the Pilot Street 2 is derived from Michelin’s experience in MotoGP and closely resembles its rain racing tyre.

Primarily designed for the small motorcycle commuter who does heavy mileage on an annual basis, the Pilot Street 2 is capable of delivering sporting levels of grip when needed. Additionally, this performance edge transfers into the wet says Ross Shields, Michelin’s Asia commercial director, two wheel.

This is obtained from the thread pattern of the Pilot Street 2 which has progressive lateral grooves and smaller centre grooves to clear water from the contact patch. From TUV testing, the Pilot Street 2 is 4.4 seconds faster over a 1.2 km long test track than two of Michelin’s other competitors in this market segment.

The Michelin Pilot Street 2 comes in sizing suitable for small displacement motorcycles with 17-inch wheels, with front tyre sizes from 60/90-17 to 120/60-17 while rear tyre sizing starts at 70/90-17 all the way up to 150/60-17. For the 70/90-17, 80/90-17, 90/80-17 and 100/80-17, the tyre is bi-directional, with tyre rotation depending on whether it is fitted on the front or rear wheel.

For the scooters, tyre sizes range from fitments for 10-inch wheels, as well as 14-inch and 16-inch wheel sizes, which Michelin says caters for about 85% of motorcycles and scooters in the Asian market. “Pricing for the 2019 Michelin Pilot Street 2 will be close to the previous Pilot Street,” said Shields and is expected to be available in Michelin Malaysia dealers by the end of September.

I guess Michelin took the time to read user review on the current Pilot Street which is rubbish when its wet where a tire 1/2 its price can easily outperform it.

Its superb on on dry road and thats expected.
Let hope the price range remain the same, if not there are lots of alternative at 10-30% cheaper.

Bought Michelin Pilot Street Radial after wathing their promo youtube gimmick- wet braking better than other xxx brand -with some animation, (fake?) analysis wet stopping distances, radial vs bias information. In 2015 this brand were hot in the market.

Later I experienced few times wet braking slip -especially on cement (shopping mall/ workplace) parking lot. Their promos were half truth ( maybe this time too). Many told me their same bad experience. The good mileage 20k++

In 2016, I found pilot street hardly available anywhere, then metzeler became alternative. 6 times change so far with mezleler. I felt metzeler not good as before: very low milage, worn out less than 10K (at speed 110 ~120) compare to 18K for 2017 version (at speed 130~145)- 150/60 size or maybe I just get the defect product.

Forget it- now it is time to change again..Hope 2019 v2 pilot street is real no more gimmick- cheaper with better wet grip. Good look- will try one.

  • Mohan tire 17 inch cubchai front cannot use for rear. So it is not bi directional. 17 inch tire only has dedicated for front and rear. You wrote bidirectional is wrong. Only scooter 14 inch is two way use pls correct your writing

From the tyre sizing chart, as well as during the press conference with Ross Shields and Laurent Trevisan of Michelin, it was confirmed the Michelin Pilot Street 2 in 17-inch diameter has four sizes that are bi-directional.

  • I have yet to try this new tyre offered by Michelin. I had previously used Michelin Pilot Street. On dry surface, the grip is good on straight and corner. However on wet, it is almost a complete failure. I had locked my braked once at low speed below 30 on wet road, my tyre just skid through like on ice (Brand new tyre, already run few hundreds km). The thread on Pilot Street are not suitable for Malaysia weather where it always rain. I personally think that Michelin should develop a tyre with thread like Corsa Sport Rain with Pilot GP compound. Maybe Michelin could offer smtg like Pilot Road 5 for smaller bikes (Just saying this since I see good review all around). I’m riding Yamaha 125ZR. I bought Michelin with high expectations for performance. I’m not concern with tyre life factor but rather how well it grip during rain, in straight, corners and emergency braking where you lock the tyre.

Just maintain use Corsa Sport Rain then.. of course the brand isn’t as glamorous as Michelin, but its proven to be a very good tyre for daily commuting in Malaysian weather and comes with lower price tag. I dare say its probably a better tyre than this new tyre too.
