Geely begins satellite production for self-driving cars

Mass production for Geely’s low earth orbit satellites has officially commenced. Manufacturing is handled by a group member, which takes place at the Geely’s original hometown of Taizhou in the Zhejiang province. The annual output capacity is approximately 500 satellites.

The satellites, which were independently developed by subsidiary company Geespace, will eventually form a network to provide highly precise GPS navigation data to guide autonomous vehicles. Various types of satellites will be built to realise other functions such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications.

This marks the entry of China’s largest privately owned automaker into a field long dominated by the country’s military division. Prior to this, the manufacturing of satellites had been the domain of enterprises linked to the People’s Liberation Army.

With US private firms making leaps in the space business, Geely found that entering the satellite business is a must if it wishes to expand its global presence. According to Nikkei Asia, Geely founder and chairman Eric Li Shufu serves in the National People’s Congress, and has close relations to president Xi Jinping. Xi once served as party secretary in the Zhejiang province, where Geely is headquartered.

Given that there’s likely to be some military involvement here, I rather drive my own vehicle myself, thank you.

You might as well live in cave. All technology have military involvement.
Ur computers, ur satelites, ur GPS, ur internet, etc

if u want to let the military, especially a foreign one, to help ‘auto-drive’ ur car, might as well let them dictate where u live, what job u do, what food u eat, what u read, what u watch, etc.

Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp, Line, etc already does that for you without military involvement. So?

          • Facebook and social media is a cancer on society anyways. Maybe someone will have a conversation with a human and not a screen. I remember being very vocal in my college days about the bad side of social media to humanity. The pandemic has exacerbated those effects to newer levels.

Fun fact: Social media like Facebook is a tool used to spread hate, bigotry, misinformation, conspiracies, manipulation, propaganda, vanity, etc: they’ve always been there, but things like Facebook not only make it easy to spread, but actually encourage it. Sensationalism pays, but it’s also what tears people apart. A lot of terrible people have not only been given a voice but have been given power, thanks to social media.

US military is already using Tesla’s Starlink for military purposes, that also means without ambiguity it’s now officially a military-linked company. Let’s see how the Chinese will slap Tesla, by your definition that’s how it works. Good luck to Musk
Btw, good luck to you that you are being spied on by your own government while taking in their lies to destroy others

If you’re not even ‘the person of interest’, you shouldn’t be worried about being spied on. But you should at least want to steer your life towards where you want to, and do the same when you drive your own car, instead of leaving it to be auto-driven by a bunch of satellites that you don’t even have control over.

What makes you so sure you’re not a “person of interest” to them? Also interesting you could flippantly say that when I’m sure you had used GPS navigation without questioning who dictates the route and maybe even curse the navi when it gets you lost at times.

Yes, please go ahead & believe that they have infinite resources to regard each & everyone in the population as persons of interest, even if there’s no criminal record, no suspicious financial activities, no display of ill/sinister intent, etc. After all, it’s your choice to be paranoid.
And if you prefer to believe that everyone on the planet has totally surrendered their sense of direction & wits to the GPS system, it’s also your choice.

Then why are you paranoid about being driven autonomously if you’re not paranoid about being labeled as a ‘person of interest’? Maybe you can explain further your choice of paranoia so we aren’t paranoid about your paranoid concerns.

98aruA has already said that is your own choice. If you’re the kind who believes that only technology can solve every single human problem in the world, go ahead. If you believe an autonomous vehicle can help solve whatever you’re lacking in your driving skills, go ahead. It’s your choice, no matter who agrees or disagrees with you.

Then don’t patronise others by telling them how they should prefer their cars be driven. The march of technology is inevitable, you can only stop it from affecting you by living in a cave as Contradiction said.

Should be “provide highly precise satellite navigation data to guide autonomous vehicles” not only GPS, there’s also Beidou as well.

  • With thousands of Starlink satellite entering space, another LEO satellite coming could be higher risk of collisions.
