Perodua hybrid to be the cheapest in Malaysia when launched – will it be the Bezza or Myvi Hybrid?

Perodua hybrid to be the cheapest in Malaysia when launched – will it be the Bezza or Myvi Hybrid?

Perodua is considering the possibilities of introducing a hybrid-electric model, and it will be a price-conscious undertaking as it aims to remain at the forefront of affordability.

“Our target, if we are to introduce a [hybrid model] in the future, is to bring the cheapest hybrid model that will be on sale in Malaysia without compromising on safety,” Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said in a briefing last week.

The company is still carrying out studies to find the best way of introducing an entry-level hybrid model if it is going to do so, its president and CEO added.

Electrification is already officially present within Perodua, though this has been through a leasing plan with the Ativa Hybrid that is by invitation, for study and evaluation purposes, rather than for outright sale and private ownership of hybrid vehicles.

Perodua hybrid to be the cheapest in Malaysia when launched – will it be the Bezza or Myvi Hybrid?

The Ativa Hybrid is the most obvious candidate, given that it is the only electrified model in the Daihatsu line-up courtesy of the Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid.

However, the company’s president and CEO also revealed that its first hybrid will be a variant of a full model change, which means that it will be part of an all-new, next-generation model introduction. This, then, rules out the hybrid version of the Ativa, as its debut was in March 2021 and thus a full-model change will be much further down the line.

That also rules out the Alza, which got its FMC last july and the just-launched, second-gen Axia is firmly ICE-powered. Therefore, the next in line for a full-model change should be the Bezza sedan, which had its debut in 2016 and was facelifted in 2020. Or could it be the third-generation Myvi, which was facelifted in 2021?

An auto investor note issued by RHB Investment Bank near the beginning of this year stated that Perodua is set to unveil its first hybrid model in 2024, which reiterates what the Rawang-based national carmaker has said as early as 2019. This would mean a four- or five-year interval when viewed in the lifecycles of the Myvi and the Bezza.

If new Axia 27km/liter then hybrid should be 100km/liter. Tesla, Geely, Dongfeng, Xpeng or whatever Ev company with crappy names all better close shop.

I miss the Kenari. Used to have a MT Kenari and because the car is so light weight, easily can perform wheel spin at even 2nd gear. Imagine this car with a DC motor engine, holy cow, pocket rocket!

  • I believe the new model launch for 2024 will be the rumoured B segment SUV.

Bezza launched 2 years after the first generation Axia thus possible 2nd generation Bezza will launch 2 years after 2nd generation Axia.

    TLDR

    2024 – B segment SUV
    2025 – Bezza 2th gen
    2026 – Myvi 4th gen (pre-facelift 3rd gen lasted 4 years, (2018,2019,2020,2021) perhaps 3rd gen facelift will last 4 years too (2022,2023,2024,2025))

P2 is managed by humans. They do not have algorithm stating that they have to launch such and such at fixed interval. They launch according to market, capacity and product readiness.

Whole world are moving from hybrid to plug in hybrid and towarding to full ev, now perodua just starting hybrid basic and still need to wait until 2024? Why not jump start with plug in hybrid? Who else need hybrid if entire world is enforcing their country to no longer use ICE and fully go on EV in next 20 years? Look at China, Japan and some European countries are forcing America go for full EV policy and start ban for selling new ICE vehicles. Come on perodua… why development so slow and so far behind in engineering thought?

I tend to agree with your point. However, Malaysia as a 3rd world country, isn’t ready for plug-in EV/hybrid. Just see how unprepared the infrastructure is. Also, look around us, most people are still living under a rock. They are not ready to accept PHEV. Many motorheads are still too absorbed in their fantasy “turbo = power” mindset.

    • As a manufacturer that has millions of cars sold under their belt, I’m sure Perodua has done their studies based on the sales demographic data that they had for so long. Perodua knows their customers base very well and in fact this is the main factor that separates them from Proton. Coupled with what they see on the whole EV infrastructure support and development in Malaysia, I think it is a wise choice for them to go on a more gradual EV growth. Even so, they are moving faster than Proton and some Japanese brand selling here in Malaysia.

au contraire – Proton does not need to be concerned with studies anymore. Geely will provide the relevant models when the time comes. Volvo already has a fleet of electric vehicles. It’s just a matter of time when Malaysia is ready to accept EV, then Proton will bring the models in.

very worried with how they handle the tech, as current “new tech” also they can’t solve, be it just a head unit and dashcam. someone here said they are slowly becoming Proton, with their crappy after sales service. I hate to believe it, but I am experiencing it right now with the New Alza. Very, very worried.

Perodua should give us Hybrid now instead of keep talking talking and talking, by the time they launch hybrid all already move to EV, esp looking at how aggressive China car company is pushing EV to Malaysia

Looking at their progress that need 5 years just to study Ativa Hybrid. I guess P2 next hybrid could be the 5th gen of Myvi in 2034.

that 5-year study is for their EZ-Mobi wing as well.
Also, although that is a 5-year programme, the CEO already stated in a press release that they will introduce an electric (albeit not specific on which type of electric) in the next 1 or 2 year.

Hybrid is awesome idea but what kind of hybrid? If hybrid macam toyota prius then better forget it. Real hybrid please where you can use either batter or petrol. Fake hybrid like toyota can buang jauh jauh sikit.

do you know why Apple is so successful? Because they distance the consumers from all the techy nonsense. The same for car makers. I cant be bothered what kind of hybrid is inside my car. I paid my money, I just want a good car that consumes little fuel. So all these real/fake hybrid is hogwash. Make life simple please.
