BYD tops Malaysia EV market; 3,728 units sold in 2023

Distributor for BYD passenger vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Beyond Auto (SDBA) has emerged to be the best-selling electric vehicle brand in the country, the company has announced.

According to data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the brand has sold 3,728 electric vehicles in 2023, marginally surpassing its market rival BMW which sold 3,600 electric vehicles last year.

“Our achievement of the highest EV vehicle sales in 2023 reflects the strong support and trust by Malaysian consumers in BYD. Our comprehensive network of after sales support nationwide is a key differentiator in our success,” said Sime Darby Motors MD Southeast Asia Jeffrey Gan said in a statement.

“With the imminent arrival of the highly anticipated BYD Seal, SDBA remains dedicated in fostering the adoption of EV in Malaysia and is confident that this will further solidify BYD’s position as a leader in the country’s evolving automotive landscape,” Gan added.

In Malaysia, the brand sells the Dolphin and the Atto 3, which was launched on the Malaysian market in December 2022. Its line-up in Malaysia will be joined by the Seal, which has been previewed locally and is open for pre-booking.

This comes against the backdrop of battery-electric vehicle sales in Malaysia which reached 10,159 units in 2023, representing a 286% jump over the 2,631 units of BEVs sold in 2022.

Good one. The Atto 3 is a great vehicle. Here is a tip.
Battery prices going south. BYD can have higher sales figure and market share when you re-price lower… before Tesla re-price theirs.

The pictured above BYD Dolphin prices across several markets:
    Malaysia RM 100K to 125.5K
    Thailand THB 800K (RM 105K)
    Philipines PHP 1400K (RM 118K)
    Australia AUD 39K (RM 120K)
    Germany Euro 35K (RM 179K)
    UK GBP 38K (RM 180K)
    China RMB 126K (RM 74K)

Actually, our prices are inline with other markets, except China and Europe. Europe prices are higher to protect its own domestic car manufacturers from the Chinese onslaught.

    • Wait for EV tax exemption to go away in 2025, straight GG. Perodua EV will reign supreme then, like it or not. This is a terrible country to live in as a car enthusiast.

I doubt Perodua has the wherewithal to develop an EV from the ground up and be competitive. When tax exemption goes away and Perodua enjoys price competitiveness that is off the charts, and they only slap Toyota/Daihatsu EV tech onto current model and call it a day, that will do more harm than good to EV adoption.

Look at the joke of an EV that is the bZ4X from Toyota. My god

Proton should re-badge geely EV. Got lot of model to choose. One of the great choice is geely panda and rebadge to “protong beruang” at sell at 30k. 150km range should be enough to go and back from work. cheap some more

I agree. I believe future trend of a family will be 1 city drive car (low mileage EV or small engine car), and one bigger size for long distance. Those Japanese kei car (660cc-1L) are good option too, cheap road tax, spacious for grocery & bulk item delivery.
