The BYD brand is now officially launched in Malaysia, and the Chinese EV specialist is having a full weekend of activities and test drives at Bandar Malaysia in KL. The first model for BYD here and the star of the show is the BYD Atto 3, a fully electric crossover that was just unveiled by new MITI minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
Official distributor BYD SD Motors Malaysia (BYD SDM, part of Sime Darby Motors) is offering two variants of the Atto 3, the Standard Range with a 49.92 kWh battery offering 410 km of range (NEDC, 345 km WLTP), and the Extended Range with a 60.48 kWh battery, rated for 480 km (NEDC, 420 km WLTP).
The SR is priced at RM149,800 while the ER will set you back RM167,800. Prices for this CBU EV are duty exempted, on-the-road excluding insurance. The final prices are slightly lower than the pre-booking estimates of RM150k and RM170k. A “Grand Launch Special” introductory package adds on a free portable home charger, free V2L extension cable and RM1,000 worth of public charging credit.
Both in-house Blade EV batteries are connected to a front-mounted electric motor rated at 204 PS/310 Nm. 0-100 km/h acceleration is 7.3 seconds for both. This means that only range and kit separates SR and ER.
The Atto 3 is built on 400V architecture and supports AC charging (Type 2) up to 7 kW as well as DC fast charging (CCS2), the latter at a max rate of either 70 kW (SR) or 80 kW (ER). At the higher input rate, 0-80% state of charge can be reached in 45 minutes. The car has a V2L function to power other devices.
By the way, if you’re wondering about the Atto 3’s size, it’s larger than a Proton X50. At 4,455 mm long and 1,875 wide, the BYD EV is 125 mm longer than Proton’s B-segment SUV, and 75 mm wider. The Atto 3’s 2,720 mm wheelbase is 120 mm longer than the X50’s. The EV’s 440L boot is 110L larger than the our ICE benchmark. By the way, the 1,750 kg ER is 70 kg heavier than the SR.
Equipment wise, the Atto 3 SR comes with a panoramic sunroof, heated electric wing mirrors, 5.0-inch digital instrument panel, faux leather seats, six-way powered driver’s seat (four-way for passenger), 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitor, electronic parking brake with auto hold, LED headlamps and rear lights and adaptive front lights.
Also on are a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen (landscape or portrait, not angle), auto air con and an NFC key card (wave at wing mirrors). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is wireless – the former is onboard now while AA will be available in Q2 2023. Spotify is already present, though. You’ll also get a built-in dashcam and six speakers.
The ER adds on an electronic tailgate, multi-colour gradient rhythmic ambient lighting on the door handles (single colour on the SR) and eight speakers with “Dirac HD” sound, PM2.5 air filter and a wireless phone charger. From the outside, the ER can be differentiated by its 18-inch wheels (215/55). The SR rides on 215/60 R17 rubber.
Safety wise, it’s very comprehensive on this five-star Euro NCAP rated car, and both SR and ER get the same kit. Six airbags plus an centre side airbag for the driver (inside shoulder), full ADAS with stop and go for the ACC and door open warning are standard. Isofix child seat mounts are on the two outer rear seats.
So, what do you think of the BYD Atto 3? Rivals in the entry-level full EV arena are the Hyundai Kona Electric (RM156k to RM208k) and perhaps the base 58 kWh Lite version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (RM207k). Great Wall Motors’ Ora Good Cat was launched last month, priced from RM139,800 to RM169,800. Older EV names that have been somewhat forgotten include the latest Renault Zoe (RM163k) and the OG of EVs, the Nissan Leaf.
Once again, the Atto 3 starts from RM149,800 for the Standard Range while the Extended Range goes for RM167,800. The factory warranty is six years or 150,000 km, while the Blade EV battery’s separate warranty is for eight years or 160,000 km. There’s another separate warranty for the drive unit – eight years or 150,000 km for the motor, motor controller, DC assembly and electric control assembly.
Lastly, there are five colours – Ski White, Boulder Grey, Forest Green, Parkour Red and the signature Surf Blue – and the interior is in an Eclipse Blue/Hazy Grey combo.
The BYD Grand Launch event is open to the public from tomorrow till Sunday, and you can come over and experience the Atto 3 for yourself, as well as BYD’s tech showcase. Details here. The Seal and Dolphin EVs, which are set for a late-2023 debut, are also in the house. Click the links to read more.

Better than CRV
CRV don’t have blind spot monitor and 360 camera but Lanewatch while BYD Atto 3 EV got blind spot monitor and 360 camera
Still waiting for that guy to come here and say nobody are allowed to sell EV below RM 150k to protect certain something. He promise to dance naked in KL somemore.
BYD is the best for city drive
Great to see ADAS being standard on more and more manufacturers who are selling their cars in Malaysia. This is the way.
Nice Toyota-BYD Atto 3

Yup. Read on BYD, Toyota Agree to Establish Joint Company for Battery Electric Vehicle Research and Development
Toyota dont have battery technology.. only hydrogen technology… BYD build EV for Toyota
Bring more BYD models in
I would like to see them bringing in the gorgeous BYD Seal.
We’re still waiting for Rafizi to drop the Myvi price to RM25k using his formula.
Let him drop petrol prices to RM 1.50 first. We are still waitinggg….
Sikit-sikit Rafizi, why always want to meroyan? Lower car prices are not even in PH’s GE15 manifesto.
Ya loh. RM 1.50 petrol janji pun belum setel so he must make good his earlier promises first!
Tengok anwar punya ceramah bulan 7 tahun ni. Ada dia cakap
Dia cakap nak buat camne kalau dia lom jadi perdana menteri. Haha
RM1.50/l that was like 10years ago… did you gave him chance that time? no… so what is the fuss? BN also say kangkung RM1 la… mana ada RM1 now?
don’t believe any politician talk. they can say whatever they want and time come poeple will forgot it.
What happens if the price of cars halved but our roads, traffic, transport system don’t improve?
Very well packaged. I think all other SUVs at this price point will struggle to sell.
see the price 149k terus skip, totally unaffordable to major Malaysian. we are still under developed country, put this price range just wait for bankrupt only
Correct. Not affordable by most Malaysians. Just boycott all the EV’s so it will go bankrupt. And, it’s not practical for daily use yet.
Work harder to earn more, it’s not the car price, it’s your problem
how much would you like to pay for a car that wont bankrupt you? 20k for an electric car? why don’t you run the company instead. It is not your budget car, doesn’t mean is not for everyone else and don’t speak on behalf of “the majority Malaysian”. 149k is a damn good deal for an electric car and for whatever it is.
You are not their target customer.
It is your problem not afford to buy the EV. This price is attractive among all EV launched in Malaysia so far.
Good bargain SUV
Is this EV speed limited to 180 kph?
In a glance, looks like a rebadged Proton. Interior a bit ugly. With that price, I think Kona EV still a better choice.
With so many EVs in Malaysia these days, I would like to know how the 2nd hand market will be like in the next few years, with significant battery degradation.
If you concern about 2nd hand value then don’t even think of any single EV models. EV cars used car value is super low regardless of brands. In China some owner only drive merely 1 month and sell to used car, the used car dealer offer 30% cut and some used car dealers refuse to accept if the car models aren’t popular.
Battery replacement cost after warranty?
Looking forward to test drive
Distance range is as good as BMW
Handsome
To start with this is a very good car the charging is friendly to all charges in Thailand
Nice
Need more affordable ev coming in to Malaysia
Need more affordable ev coming in to Malaysia 100k come on
This car is selling at below RM100k in China. Sime Darby’s profit margin is so high considering there are no import tax.
In my humble view, this is the Best EV in our market Now, BUT: many unanswered Questions still on EVs selling in Malaysia:
1. How many charging stations, locations, throughout Malaysia NOW, and, in the next year or so?
2. Every EV Seller here – and worldwide – have different Specs and charging stations. It is Buyers”Own Risks, as and when they Buy a Model/Brand, as he/she has to go to that EV’s charging stations only, all times.
3. I lived in a Condo – Do you notice every EV Brand doesn’t address this issue?: every existing condo Do Not have room/space for installing EV charging stations – made worse, as I said, because each EV brand has its own charging station, which another Brand can’t use, different specs etc.
4. Wall charging? Also out, is no space provided in each Condo parking lot?
5. The initial 5-8 years of all aspects of service warranties are all very good – but, it’s the next 5-8 years that a motorist has to worry when b=Buying an EV – unless one is that rich to change cars every 5 years or so.
6. The Authorities will be swamped/overwhelmed with different/000s charging stations all over the country, say, these coming 5 years alone – so, where is TNB’s role here – very quiet and silent here?

Why must wait all EV infra setup only then launch EV? When ICE reveal to them world century ago there were also lack of infra like petrol station. Most car owners are actually refill petrol at home back then. I believe you are lack of business sense.
1. Charging stations will getting more gradually. Why don’t build charging station first before launching EV? Business is talking ROI, 1 charging port is approximately half of million ringgit. A station with 4 charging ports is RM 2 million. Without EV cars come and charge how long it gonna takes to recover the cost. Bear in mind that the owner of charging station needs to pay electric bill to TNB. They are not earn every single cent by themselves.
2. Most if not all EV cars are using CCS 2 except Tesla US model and some old EV models are using own port.
3. Some brand new Condo have standby few spot for EV car to charge and payment thru TNG or credit card. Current old condo can do the same to convert few parking lots and install a charging port. My friend’s condo Sky Meridian at KL got standby charging port.
4. Wall charging is for landed. Condo should refer to above answer.
5. EV car is far lesser components compare to ICE cars. There are almost no maintenance schedule for EV. No lubricant, fan belt, spark plug, engine mounting, radiator, fuel systems etc. Only things to change are wipers and tyres in 5 years time. Other than that are regular check up only. Biggest concern of EV is battery lifespan.
6. TNB can setup its own charging station or allow 3rd parties to provide charging service. This is not an issue to EV car.
Whether we like it or not EV is future and EV car sales picking up fast all over the world. 10 years after Malaysia at least 20-30% new car sales gonna be EV car. I worked in a car related industry many years till now and we have anticipated what will it be for next 5 and 10 years time.

How long can the small tyres last?
Atto3 Curb weight 1680kg and tyre size 215/60/R17
CRV curb weight 1549 and tyre size 235/60/R18

Do not be fooled by the propaganda on climate change due to ICE.
EV is bull shit…the battery still needs to be charged by electricity generated either from hydro power, crude oil or coal fired or nuclear powered stations.
The mining of minerals for EV batteries is far more damaging to the environment then all the pollution by ICE!!
Booked already. will be coupled with installed 11.78kW solar system under NEM insentive. roughly no need to worry about energy and fuel price fluctuation for the next 10 years.
remember the same car is inly rm60k in china. so where comes the extra rm80k?
Solar charging might be the future for ev car
I am interested. Is it really worth it. How much it the cost per km, and after 150000 km you are on your own whats the cost after that on components that will break down the once you mention on warranty.

Saw one on the road yesterday evening
With such price, I will buy in China for luxury BYD Tang for about RMB 230,000
Tak payah la nak sembang lebih2 kalau hanya mampu pakai MyVi sambung bayar….
Nak kreta EV canggih manggih tapi nak bayar harga Bezza… get real la..
If no Duty & Tax, why not let us direct import from Singapore / China cheaper, why must Sime Darby the Evil Crony again?
