30.4% more xEVs sold in Malaysia in 2024 – Zafrul

There were 30.4% more electrified vehicles (xEVs) sold in Malaysia in 2024 versus 2023, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has said, according to The Star.

He added that the 46,239 xEVs sold – comprising hybrids (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEV) – made up 5% of all passenger vehicle registrations last year.

“Based on the 2023-2024 trends, the government expects the cumulative number of xEVs on the road to reach at least 400,000 passenger and commercial vehicles by 2030,” he said yesterday in a written parliamentary response to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen‘s query on the government’s EV promotion plans.

Malaysia targets passenger and commercial xEVs to make up 20% of annual sales by 2030, 50% by 2040 and 80% by 2050, Zafrul said.

In another response to Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse, he said 119,000 xEVs were registered in Malaysia as of December 31, 2024, and there are 3,611 public EV chargers in the country, including 1,095 DC and 2,516 AC (up from 956 DC + 2,398 AC = 3,354 chargers in November 2024)

“The government has also maintained the target to provide 10,000 EV charging facilities by 2025, comprising 8,500 AC chargers and 1,500 DC chargers,” Zafrul said, adding that fully-imported (CBU) EVs are free of import and excise duties until end-2025, and until end-2027 for locally-assembled (CKD) EVs. The start of targeted RON 95 petrol subsidies in mid-2025 could also boost xEV adoption, he also said.
