Chery Tiggo Cross CKD production starts in Malaysia – first 1.5 Turbo, Hybrid units roll out of Inokom plant

Local production of the Chery Tiggo Cross, which was launched in Malaysia on July 9, has begun, with Chery Malaysia announcing that the first units of the compact SUV have started rolling off the production line at the Inokom assembly line in Kulim, Kedah.

Production consists of both variants of the Tiggo Cross available for the market, which are the 1.5 Turbo, priced at RM88,800, and the 1.5 Hybrid CSH, which goes for RM99,800, both on-the-road without insurance.

“The Tiggo Cross is our smallest and most affordable SUV yet, and we are proud to assemble it right here in Malaysia, leveraging local capabilities and strategic partnerships that ensure we deliver global quality with local relevance.” said Chery Malaysia VP Michael Chew.

“Assembling the vehicle here underscores Chery’s deep commitment to the local market while enhancing our capacity to offer more competitive, accessible vehicles. It also reflects our broader localisation strategy and long-term vision for sustainable growth within Malaysia’s automotive landscape,” he added.

To recap, the Tiggo Cross Turbo features a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 147 PS and 210 Nm of torque, with drive going to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission to enable a 0-100 km/h time of 10.3 seconds.

As for the Hybrid, its powertrain is based around a 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine offering 102 PS and 125 Nm. The mill is mated to a Direct Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that has two integrated electric motors rated at 204 PS and 310 Nm, with a 1.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery linked to it.

The series-parallel hybrid system has five operating states, including EV (running on electricity only), Tandem (engine acts as a generator while the electric motor drives the wheels), Parallel (both the engine and electric motor working together), Direct Engine (engine directly drives the wheels at speeds above 80 km/h) and Energy Recovery (regenerative braking and coasting to charge the battery).

The Tiggo Cross comes with a seven-year, 150,000-km manufacturer warranty, with the Hybrid variant gaining an additional eight-year, 160,000-km warranty for its battery, motors and hybrid control unit. Both variants also come with seven years of free towing service.
