Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The Nissan Leaf ZE1 is a C-segment, five-seat electric hatchback launched in 2019. It suits drivers who want a conventional five-door EV with a quoted 270 km range rather than an SUV body. The sole EV variant is priced from RM168,888 and uses a 40.0 kWh battery with a 148 hp electric motor.

Leaf in 2026 — what's new

For 2026, the Nissan Leaf moves into its third generation as an SUV, so this is not a fresh update to the ZE1 hatchback. The new Leaf is announced with up to 218 PS, up to 604 km of range and a CCS2 charging port. In Japan, the Leaf Nismo adds sportier styling, chassis changes, a Nismo mode and regenerative-braking tuning, but no extra power or range.

Verdict

The ZE1 Leaf remains a straightforward front-wheel-drive, five-door electric hatchback, and its 270 km claimed range gives it a clearly defined use case. Its RM168,888 price is close to the RM165,000 Renault Zoe and below the RM193,888 MINI Electric, but it costs substantially more than the RM59,800 Proton eMas 5, RM67,800 Wuling Bingo and RM109,800 GWM Ora Good Cat. That is a hard price gap to ignore.
