Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The Renault Megane RS is a C-segment petrol hot hatch for drivers who want a five-seat hatchback with serious performance hardware rather than a regular family car. The Mk4 generation launched in 2019 and the Malaysian range starts from RM279,888, with manual and dual-clutch automatic versions of the 280 Cup offered.

Megane RS in 2026 — what's new

For 2026, the Mk4 Megane RS has no new model-year update and carries on here as the 280 Cup in manual and EDC forms. Renault had also moved the petrol-powered Megane RS towards discontinuation by the end of 2023, with a pure EV taking over its role. The later 300 Trophy facelift was launched in Malaysia in 2021 with 300 PS, 420 Nm and EDC only at RM326k, separate from the 280 Cup range here.

Which variant to buy

Most buyers who want the Megane RS for its driver involvement should pick the 280 Cup MT at RM279,888. It gets the same 1,798 cc petrol engine, 276 hp output and five-seat layout as the EDC. Pay RM299,888 for the 280 Cup EDC only if you want the wet dual-clutch automatic for traffic or daily use. The RM20,000 gap buys the gearbox, not a different power figure.

Verdict

The Megane RS 280 Cup is a focused petrol hot hatch with a clear choice: manual for maximum involvement, EDC for convenience. It is not cheap next to the Volkswagen Golf GTI from RM244,012, but it sits below the Golf R and Toyota GR Corolla on price. Its position is sharper than a regular C-segment hatch, though the petrol Megane RS line has already been marked for retirement.
