    Leapmotor C10

In the first part of our interview with Stellantis ASEAN MD Isaac Yeo, the company’s regional chief declared Leapmotor as its main brand for Malaysia in the immediate future. Stellantis, and PSA before this, is synonymous with Peugeot, but the French brand will be taking a back seat for the time being, making way for Chinese brand Leapmotor to spearhead the search for volume.

You can read more about the logic of scaling back Peugeot here, but Yeo made it very clear to us that Leapmotor will be Stellantis’ top striker for now, the player to ‘lead the line’ and get the goals that will keep the company in the game (all football terms are the author’s own).

Work is already underway to prepare Stellantis’ Gurun plant – fully acquired from Naza in late 2021 – for semi-knocked down (SKD) Leapmotor production, which will start with the C10 electric SUV by the end of this year. The first stage is an initial investment of five million euros (RM24.5 million) in the 60,000-unit capacity plant, and the next stage will be deeper localisation and KD assembly for the second model, the smaller B10.

Leapmotor CKD plans in Malaysia on track – C10 by year end, B10 in 2026, 2,400 units a year target each

    Stellantis ASEAN MD Isaac Yeo

Yeo said that Stellantis is looking at 2,400 units of each model, which translates to 200 units per model, per month, for a brand volume of 400 units per month. That’s a huge jump from what Leapmotor is doing now (not in the top 20 EVs list as of July, but ninth last month with 66 units following an update cum price cut in June), so what’s behind this optimistic projection?

The reason why Malaysia’s EV market is a vibrant free-for-all now, where brands from Proton to Xpeng are doing good business importing EVs from China is due to tax-free incentives given to CBU imported EVs, but this tax break will end along with 2025. This means that barring a last-minute extension by the government, the price of CBU EVs will rise in 2026. Then, they won’t look so good value next to ICE-powered rivals.

And CKD EVs. The only way for carmakers to continue to enjoy tax breaks is to locally assemble their EVs, and the Leapmotor C10 will be among a small group of battery-powered vehicles that will be assembled here. The future sub-RM100k CKD market will have Perodua’s homegrown EV, the TQ Wuling Bingo, Dongfeng Box (potentially) and the Proton eMas 5.

The latter will roll off Proton’s new EV factory that will also churn out the current EV sales champ eMas 7. There’s also fellow SUV Chery Omoda E5. One would imagine global EV sales leader and Proton eMas’ biggest rival, BYD, complying with the tax-free requirement, but the pool will surely be much smaller than today.

“That’s where my advantage comes in. I’m one of the few OEMs who have a plant in Malaysia. If today I sell at RM125k, CKD I will still sell at RM125k. That’s my advantage compared to all the new players in the market, because I have a plant and it’s fully amortised. We will still keep the MRSP (for the C10) even if the incentive goes away,” Yeo told paultan.org.

“If the tax (free scheme) goes away, I don’t need two years to CKD – I’m there!” he declared.

Initially, the CKD cars will be for local consumption, to get in line with the government’s requirements. The group’s ASEAN chief says that aside from the fact that Malaysia currently has no EV and battery ecosystem, there’s also no special tax incentives under AFTA to export EVs to ASEAN neighbours. But the long term plan for Gurun involves exports of not just Leapmotor, but cars from Stellantis’ other brands too.

“The plant for Malaysia is not only for Malaysia. Malaysia is my main manufacturing hub in Asia Pacific, but it (volume) is actually for exports in the future. In the past, we also exported Peugeots from Gurun, and the plan is to have four to five brands all built in Malaysia for exports,” Yeo said, adding that Stellantis plans to use up Gurun’s 60k per annum capacity. Exports will be ‘beyond ASEAN’, he said.

  • Leapmotor B10 EV at Auto Shanghai – five-seat C-segment SUV with up to 215 hp is bound for Malaysia

Leapmotor B10 EV at Auto Shanghai – five-seat C-segment SUV with up to 215 hp is bound for Malaysia

This is the Leapmotor B10, which made its debut at last year’s Paris Motor Show. Having gone on sale in its domestic market last month, the all-electric SUV is now on show at Auto Shanghai 2025. Sitting below the C10 in the automaker’s product portfolio, the B10 is due to head to Europe in the near future and will eventually be heading to Malaysia.

Measuring in at 4,515 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,655 mm tall, with a 2,735 mm-long wheelbase, the C-segment offering follows the general styling template of the larger C-series, with a front end that features a closed-off fascia and a slim bridging strip joining the headlights. At the back, the theme continues, with design accents including a horizontal light bar strip joining the rear light assemblies.

In China, the B10 is available in five variant forms, with the base variant featuring a rear electric motor offering 177 hp (179 PS, or 132 kW) and 175 Nm of torque. A 56.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides the base model with 510 km of travel on a single charge based on the CLTC standard, which translates to about 420 km of WLTP-rated range. Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 9.3 seconds.

The other variants get a more powerful electric motor putting out 215 hp (218 PS, or 160 kW) and 240 Nm Versions with the 56.2 kWh battery offer an identical 510 km CLTC range, but a higher capacity 67.1 kWh LFP unit provides 600 km of CLTC-rated range (or around 490 km WLTP). In any case, the 0-100 km/h sprint time for the higher output B10 drops to 6.8 seconds.

In terms of charging, the automaker says it takes about 4.2 hours to charge the smaller battery from 30-80%, or 5.6 hours for the larger battery via the AC route at a max rate of 11 kW. With a 400V electrical architecture, the B10 supports DC fast charging that can get the battery from 30 to 80% state-of-charge in around 19 minutes for the 56.2 kWh unit, or 20 minutes for the 67.1 kWh pack.

Like the B01 EV sedan that made its global debut at today at Auto Shanghai, the B10 is underpinned by the automaker’s LEAP 3.5 platform. According to the automaker, the B10’s chassis has been co-developed with Stellantis to deliver superior handling and comfort. Technical highlights include a newly optimised steering angle algorithm and an integrated braking system to offer a smoother and more energy-efficient driving experience.

Like the larger C10 features the brand’s CTC 2.0 (Cell-to-Chassis) technology, which features custom-designed, floor-mounted low-profile battery cells Aside from providing additional cabin space and enhanced structural integration, it allows improved fast-charging efficiency to be obtained.

Inside, you’ll find a cleanly presented cockpit featuring an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch 2.5K high-definition touchscreen infotainment display, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon SA8155 chip powering a Leapmotor OS 4.0 Plus operating system. Unlike the C10, the B10 gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity from the get-go.

Available equipment for the B10 includes a 12-speaker Leapmotor sound system, a panoramic glass roof, single-zone climate control, 256-colour ambient lighting, wireless charger, a powered tailgate and Oeko-Tex faux leather upholstery on higher spec variants. Boot space is 420 litres, but folding down the rear seats brings the volume up to 1,415 litres.

Higher-end variants feature a full ADAS suite with 26 functions, with a Qualcomm SA8650 driving chip being supported by an array of cameras, ultrasonic radars, millimetre wave radars and a roof-mounted lidar sensor. All versions also get automatic parking as standard.

In China, launch prices for the B10 went from 109,800 to 139,800 yuan (about RM66,100 to RM84,200), pricing that suggests the SUV could be very competitive when it eventually gets here. It has already been earmarked for Malaysia via the CKD route, as indicated last week during the signing ceremony for the local assembly of Leapmotor models, which is set to begin with production of the C10 by the end of 2025.

Leapmotor B10 debuts at 2024 Paris Motor Show

The Leapmotor B10 has officially made its debut at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, and this is a C-segment SUV that slots into the product line-up below the C10 that is a D-segment SUV offering, making it brand’s smallest model after the T03 city car.

Underpinned by the manufacturer’s Leap 3.5 architecture, the B10 is the first to use the B-series platform that will form the basis of future Leapmotor models. The B10 has been designed to “meet the needs of tech-savvy, eco-conscious consumers looking for an electric vehicle that blends style, performance, and advanced technology,” according to Stellantis.

Specific details on the B10 have yet to be disclosed officially, though current models in the Leapmotor product range offer a range-extender powertrain – where a combustion engine serves as a generator – in addition to a battery-electric setup, save for the T03 which is purely a BEV.

In terms of styling, the Leapmotor B10 draws from the C10 in using a front fascia that resembles that of the larger model, though with the closed-off grille joining a pair of slimmer headlamps. At the rear, a full-width light bar connects the tail lamps, and bears more than a passing resemblance to the units on the fully electric Porsche Macan.

Inside, the B10’s Leap 3.5 architecture enables the use of ADAS, a customisable digital cockpit and intelligent driving capabilities, says Leapmotor.

According to Car News China, the Leapmotor B10 will be priced in China between 100,000 yuan to 150,000 yuan, or RM60,607 to RM90,898, though the carmaker has not stated pricing for the B10 in Europe or other markets. It stated that further B-series models will be launched in Europe in 2025.

As mentioned, the B10 will be the Leapmotor’s first model from its B platform, and the brand will be launching thre new models from the B range next year, reported Car News China. Higher-end models from the range will also be equipped with lidar and AI intelligent driving chips, it added.

  • Leapmotor B10 teased ahead of Oct 14 debut in Paris

Leapmotor B10 teased ahead of Oct 14 debut in Paris

The Leapmotor B10 has been teased ahead of its official debut on October 14, 2024 at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Set to go on sale in China before making its way to global markets, the B10 is a compact SUV that could potentially rival the Kia EV3 as well as the BMW iX1.

Based on the teaser images, design cues seen on the camouflaged B10 include a protruding nose, sculpted bonnet, short overhangs as well as flush door handles. Details are limited for now, but the company says the B10 will use a new B platform and its latest ‘Leap 3.5’ electrical architecture.

Almost every Leapmotor electric vehicle (EV) on sale, aside from the T03 city car, is offered with a range-extender option (an engine acts as a generator), and the B10 is expected to follow suit. Again, the company isn’t giving too much away until next month, although it did say the B platform is an important part of its globalisation strategy.

As stated the company, the B platform will underpin a variety of models set to be introduced in 2025 which the company says are designed to “meet the needs of different consumer groups for personalised and intelligent models.”

In China, the Leapmotor line-up includes the T03, C01, C10, C11 and C16. From that bunch, the C10 and T03 have been officially launched in Europe on September 24, with the former set to be previewed to the Malaysian public this weekend – the T03 was shown here in May.
