Subaru will be unveiling its redesigned Impreza at the upcoming New York International Auto Show later this month. The third-generation model has been around since 2008, so while it’s about due time for the usual midlife freshening bit, the way it’s shaping up it could very well pass off as a fresh new car.

Two versions of the vehicle – sedan and five-door hatch – will be introduced at the show, both significantly reworked exterior and interior-wise. No major details as yet, but Subaru says the All-Wheel Drive vehicle will feature an interior featuring inproved design elements and refinement, as well as greater cabin space.

It’s also supposed to be more frugal in terms of fuel consumption, welcome news given the way fuel prices are climbing – the company estimates the US version will offer a 36 mpg (15.3 km per litre) figure on the highway, the highest in terms of fuel economy for an all-wheel-drive car sold in US.

do you mean the 1.6L 90hp standard impreza that more than 3/4 of the subaru customers bought? because they always start with the bread and butter bestseller models first. later on when sales stabilises then only will they introduce the fire breathing wrx versions top prep up the sales effort. if it is the fire breathing version you miss, don’t worry, subaru is not silly enough to leave out another money making segment. it will surely come back.

A little soft, probably suitable for those who like Civic/Altis… if only they are able to price it the same…

  • This car doesn’t have ganas-ness of the previous Imprezas. Looks so ordinary, just like an Altis/Sylphy.

you should see the impreza models without the wrx or sti bagdes. it is all a matter of adding a fierce body kit, bigger wheels and fat exhausts. other than that, the standard impreza models all look very tame. it has been like that since the 1st impreza that was made.

  • Technically, this is not just a facelift, since the body is new.

    The 2012 Impreza is not a facelift or a mid-life freshening – it’s a complete redesign.

Subaru cars are tougher than any 4WDs including Toyota Hilux, because Subaru raced WRC, and always offer the 4WD system to their passenger cars such as Impreza.

I believe this design direction makes them sell more cars to civilians rather than race-spec-minded like us here..so, from that money they will pump up a new design back to something what impreza subaru should be..this is ‘make-money-design’ direction i guess..hehe :D

you are right. once they have enough of the civil looking cars sold, they would as a natural progression, introduce the fire breathing ones with all the fat exhausts, big wheels, fat bodykits, big wings and big turbos. just wait… and be patient.

the current cars has very subjective looks..and futhermore..unlike the current lancer evo..the subaru sti (and all the other versions) ride on an old platform which means that underneath..the current car is about 8 to 9 years old….which explains why the current sti isnt much of a subaru in terms of handling despite the extensive use of 4wd computer wizardry diffs etc….its an odd way of evolving but the gamble didnt pay off..and hence the sudden change…..
