2014 Range Rover Evoque and Evoque Coupe launched in Malaysia – 9-speed auto, from RM400k

Land Rover Malaysia has launched the 2014 Range Rover Evoque. The biggest update for 2014 would be the switch to a ZF nine-speed automatic transmission, which gives the Evoque three additional gear ratios. The new gearbox should promise smoother driving and better fuel economy.

Land Rover was the lead partner for ZF’s nine-speed auto project, and is the first production car to feature the gearbox. The ZF 9HP’s lowest ratio is lower than the outgoing six-speeder’s. Unlike the current car’s sequential shifting, the new gearbox has a ‘skip-shift’ function – which means it can skip a gear or two when downshifting under heavy deceleration or rapid kickdown.

In addition, the Evoque’s all-wheel drive system now features a Torque Vectoring by Braking feature, which redirects torque between all four wheels to counteract understeer.

There are also new driver assist features – Perpendicular Parking, Exit Parking and Parallel Parking assistance, which essentially help the driver park the Evoque. There’s also a new Surround Camera feature for Malaysian specs, which combines video feeds from five cameras to project an all round view of the car.

The five-door 2014 Range Rover Evoque (petrol or diesel) is priced from RM399,888 while the three-door 2014 Range Rover Evoque Coupe (petrol only) is priced from RM419,888. The price includes a five-year or 300,000 km warranty and five years or 80,000 km free scheduled maintenance.

  • Is there a price increase??
Anyway, overall this looks like a high quality product but real world reliability is another different thing!

Junk of a car. In the UK and the whole of Europe, their own surveys and magazines have rated Land Rover and Range Rover as the King of Breakdowns.

Every single warranty direct company in the UK has awarded the Range Rover as title as the Most Problematic Car and the highest warranty claim of a list of 100 car brands.

Only in Malaysia, fools get excited with Range Rover. the car is considered trash by even their own Mat Salleh motoring magazines.

Like VW, we like to worship the trash of the white man. Mat Salleh trash sells well in Asian countries!

This will work tremendously good in Penang, considering the road condition has become worse, lots of potholes, bumps and uneven roads. Wait me switch on the terrain mode, it will sail smoothly.

Crazy price increase from the original 363888 for the diesel and 373888 for the Si4 Petrol Prestige.

Of course, one can argue it now has a 9 speed auto and more auto park stuff, but isn’t 40k a bit of a big jump, and now there’s a large gap between this and the Q5?

Though one thing is for sure, it still looks gorgeous.

The technicians in Malaysia May lack of experiences fixing this 9 gear ratio, malaysia’s technicians lack of experience for super high end cars.

Can’t blame that most of us are having the perception that there are no good gearbox specialist out there.
I know a good few Audi/ Volkswagen gearbox specialist that can troubleshoot to the exact part inside the gearbox.
The only problem is that most of the “gearbox specialist” out there replacing only the said faulty part, but opt not to change the other “going to fail” parts to get more profit.
I know because I’ve seen it myself.

Firstly, kudos to LR Malaysia for bringing in a 9 speed auto to Malaysia. Think its the first time in Malaysia (of any brands, BMW including).

But honestly, I think its a bit over-priced for what is a rather small FWD based car. Better wait for the Porsche Macan. It will “macan” the Evoque for breakfast, lunch, dinner & supper. Haha. Though the Macan may cost a bit more. But at least its got more space inside, and will have Porsche’s handling credentials. Maybe the Evoque is better offroad, but would you take a RM400k off-road? Didnt think so.

The Cayenne is already 500k+… The Macan should be around 350k-400k depending on the trim and the engine.

I think the Macan will be expensive as well. Prior to launch, I am sure they will release the face lifted Cayenne and hence a price increase – which will give them room to price the Macan where they want – which is higher than we expect (not to mention we can’t afford it, anyways LOL). Doubt it will be cheaper than the LR Evoque. IMHO.

The fact of the matter is, all the current batch of so called new mid-size suv are overpriced. Only the bmw x3, audi q5 and lexus rx370 are well priced. The macan should not cost more than rm 400k, neither should the rr evoque and bmw x4. A good price range would be from rm300-380k, max! as for the remaining amount, it is all pure profit for the car sellers and the powers to be!

  • Hey guys. I would like to ask something. May i know the selling point of having 9 gears? If it’s manual, it would be tiring to change gear. It’s like f1…
