Mazda Motor Corp has announced that the next-gen Mazda 2 (Hazumi concept pictured) will feature a new 1.5 SkyActiv-D diesel engine. Like the 2.2 SkyActiv-D engine, the new motor features a very low compression ratio for a diesel – 14.8 in this case.
Displacing 1,497 cc and having a 76 mm bore and 82.5 mm stroke, the Euro 6-compliant, direct-injected four-cylinder turbo mill produces 105 PS at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm.
There’s a variable-turbine geometry turbo with rotation sensor and a water-cooled intercooler integrated into the intake manifold. The engine cooling system features cooling water control valves and water jacket spacers.
Mazda claims “outstanding dynamic performance”, “linear acceleration all the way up the rpm range” and “excellent environmental performance without resorting to expensive NOx aftertreatment systems.”
The 1.5 SkyActiv-D engine inherits many of the 2.2 SkyActiv-D’s technologies, but fortifies itself with an expanded homogenous lean burn range, reduced mechanical resistance and enhanced insulation to curb the increase in cooling loss associated with a smaller engine.
The homogeneous lean burn range is extended through the adoption of high- and low-pressure EGR systems, while cooling loss is suppressed by combustion mode transition control technology and high-dispersion solenoid injectors which, along with stepped egg-shaped pistons, help to reduce contact between the flame and chamber wall.
In the new Mazda 2, the engine will be connected to an i-stop start/stop system and i-Eloop regenerative braking. SkyActiv manual or auto gearboxes will be available, ensuring the new Mazda 2 achieves among the best JC08 economy figures for a vehicle powered solely by an internal combustion engine (excluding hybrid and micro-mini vehicles) in Japan.
Also, the new Mazda 2 diesel will meet Japan’s Post New Long-Term (PNLT) emission regulations, which were introduced in October 2009.
A research report on Berjaya Auto in March indicated that the new Mazda 2 would arrive in Malaysia before year-end – seems a pretty tall order. Rumours also exist that the car could spawn an SUV that may be called the CX-3.

Very promising diesel engine but people here unable to enjoy it because of diesel quality letting people down.

Having same strategy throughout, CBU first, CKD later.
I can expect Mazda 2 CBU will boost the sales of Mazda 3 1.5 EEV.
