The 2016 Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM race car has been teased in a series of official sketches prior to its appearance at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. With 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season still ongoing, it looks like the folks at Stuttgart just couldn’t wait to start scaring the opposition.

And scare them they certainly will – just look at the drawings! Up front, the brand’s next-gen DTM challenger looks set to sport an intimidating front apron that houses the enlarged air intake – said assembly should complement the widened wheel arches that form part of the aggressive body kit.

Elsewhere, the sketches show deep-set bonnet vents, a monumental rear wing and a diffuser replete with the most extroverted square-shaped air vents that extend from the aforementioned wheel arches. “The new Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe will again set new standards for driving dynamics and design. So, the vehicle provides the ideal basis for our DTM car,” said head of Mercedes-AMG DTM, Ulrich Fritz.

For 2016, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM race machine will again be powered by a series-mandated naturally-aspirated 4.0 litre V8 engine with a maximum output of 500 hp. From 2017 onwards, however, DTM will be harmonised with Japanese touring car series Super GT under a new Class One category, which calls for a 2.0 litre turbocharged racing motor with 600 hp.

I thought DTM would be in line with Super GT regs for 2016? 2.0L Turbo with RWD? Has that plan fallen through?

Apologies there. It’ll be the same NA 4.0 V8 for 2016, and Super GT-spec 2.0 litre turbo from 2017 onwards.
Article has been revised. Thanks for the heads up.
