The high-performing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has been unveiled in the metal. The ZL1 here makes use of a supercharged 6.2 litre LT4 engine instead of the 6.2 litre LT1 V8 mill on the SS. Other enhancements can be found on the exterior and interior of the American muscle.
The small-block V8 engine pushes out 640 hp and 868 Nm of torque. Said engine can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, or a new 10-speed automatic gearbox with a 7.39 overall ratio. The ZL1 is the first among the product range to feature this transmission.
It now weighs 90 kg less than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the exterior of the ZL1 is said to have undergone over 100 hours of wind-tunnel testing and on-track validation to improve aerodynamics and cooling. It sports a new upper and lower grille opening for better airflow, while the hood comes with a carbon-fibre insert and heat extractor for the engine.
Other visible enhancement items include a bigger front splitter, wider front fenders, unique rockers and a wing-style rear spoiler. Said items are all functional as they have been tuned to provide better aerodynamics for greater stability at high speeds. To give it better handling, a magnetic ride suspension is fitted.
Also, the ZL1 sits on 20-inch forged aluminium wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tyres that measure 285/30ZR20 at the front and 305/30ZR20 at the rear. Providing stopping power are Brembo brakes with six-piston mono bloc front calipers (with ZL1 logo) and large 390 mm two-piece front rotors.
Inside, the ZL1 gets Recaro front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and gear shift knob, both wrapped in suede. Also included is Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder and advanced connectivity features. Furthermore, it comes with a Custom Launch Control, Driver Mode Selector and dual-mode exhaust.
To add to the thrill, the ZL1 also comes with tailored intake and exhaust systems along with performance traction management and an electronic limited-slip differential. The Camaro ZL1 will go on sale later this year.
The ZL1 features a supercharged LT4 6.2L V-8 Small Block engine, with intake and exhaust systems tailored for Camaro. It is rated at an estimated 640 horsepower (477 kW) and 640 lb-ft of torque (868 Nm), backed by a standard six-speed manual transmission or all-new, available paddle-shift 10-speed automatic. The 10-speed automatic has 7.39 overall ratio for smaller steps between gears. It enables the LT4 engine to remain at optimal rpm levels during acceleration, particularly when exiting corners, for quicker laps and lightning-quick responses on both up- and down-shifts.
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 is poised to challenge the most advanced sports coupes in the world in any measure – with unprecedented levels of technology, refinement, track capability and straight-line acceleration. A cohesive suite of performance technologies tailors ZL1’s performance, featuring an updated Magnetic Ride suspension, Performance Traction Management, electronic limited-slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Driver Mode Selector. With a stronger power-to-weight ratio than its predecessor, it weighs 200 pounds less, and offers approximately 60 more horsepower and 80 more pound-feet of torque.
