Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe joins Victoria Police

Police in the Australian state of Victoria has a new addition to its fleet of patrol cars. No, it isn’t another Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon, despite their status as iconic pursuit cars. Instead, a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe dubbed as the ‘Guardian’ will join the mix, and we think it’s a perfect match.

Armed with a thumping 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet producing 585 hp at 5,500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque from 1,750-5,250 rpm, the GLE 63 Coupe is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h time of just 4.3 seconds. That should be sufficient to pursue most baddies.

Additionally, the GLE 63 Coupe features a striking blue-and-yellow livery, so remaining inconspicuous is clearly not the objective here. And that’s even before the sirens and lights come into play.

A check on the Mercedes’ official Australian site reveals that the SUV has a drive-away price exceeding AUD$200,000 (RM616,735). However, Victoria Police confirmed that the car is on loan from Mercedes for 12 months. Therefore, Australian taxpayers can lay their pitchforks down as the new fleet addition comes at no cost to them.

Even though it may be a loaned vehicle, the Guardian is still a fully operational highway patrol car. This is in addition to its role to promote in-car safety features, emphasising the importance of having the safest car you could possibly buy.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said, “death and serious injuries on Victorian roads could be reduced by a third overnight if everyone was driving the safest cars they can afford. We’re not saying that everyone needs to rush out and buy the latest and greatest but we need people to prioritise safety over leather seats and shiny wheels.”

He said the long term vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on Victoria’s roads would only be achieved through a combination of safer roads, safer people, safer speeds, and safer vehicles. The Guardian will be on display at the Industry and Innovation Precinct during the 2016 Formula One Australian Grand Prix.
