February 2016 Malaysia car sales – down 15.1% from Jan, 24.8% lower than 2015, year-to-date down 18.3%

MAA February 2016 sales-01

The Malaysian car sales figures for February 2016 has been released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). As predicted, combined sales for both passenger and commercial vehicles have slumped for the month of February 2016.

A total of 34,126 passenger vehicles and 3,750 commercial vehicles were sold during this month, equalling to a combined total of 37,876 vehicles sold overall. This is 24.8%, or 12,514 units lower than the figure achieved in the same month last year – 50,390 units. The total number is also 15.1% down compared to January 2016 (44,591 units), while the year-to-date figure is 18.3% down on 2015 (82,467 vs 100,992).

According to the MAA, the reason behind the lower sales is due to the shorter working month, and the more stringent hire purchase loan approval from banks. The association, however, is expecting sales to pick up by March 2016, thanks the longer working month and continuation of promotional campaigns by car companies.

True, especially with Toyota, as 2014 Camry 2.5V you can get roughly below RM100k (new RM180k) and 2013 Altis 1.8 at RM6Xk (new RM120k), if you really have good bargain power and haggling skills.

      Spongewai,
      You are absolutely right,spot on.
MAA is headed by a GLC woman.Of course, she has to paint a rosy picture.
Just wait for the individual breakdown analysis of sales of each car distributor.RED…RED…RED.
Most badly hurt will be Protong.
Most of the Protong fanboys got f..off by bank officers. No loans to them cos they cant fulfill basic lending criteria(very stringent now).
If all the major scandals hindering our economy continue and oil price stays below US50 a barrel, till Raya…you can see more massive layoffs and car sales sliding into the abyss.

Minister 3.85 : car sales drop is good for rakyat. Car makers will be forced to give more discount, so rakyat will win in the end. When car price reduced, we also tepati our janji, syukurlah.

Stricter loan is good for rakyat, can reduce national household debt. Rakyat will less likely to be in financial trouble without loan. Syukurlah.

Last year Feb was no shorter than this year’s Feb. Chinese New Year was also in Feb last year so why is there a 24.8% drop?

Come on MAA, just admit that the economy is bad and people are not willing or cannot afford to buy new cars this year

Good to report on this, for a strategic view of the car market. But it should be obvious we are only interested in passenger cars, not commercial. No point to mix in sales of Hino trucks here. The data extract looks half-baked, the person doing it doesn’t know what variance means.

PV sales YTD is down 17%, 15,000 vehicles less. Lets put a number to that, say average RM60k (luxury cars pulls the average up vs sales of Myvis) – RM900 mil in lost sales YTD.

RM 900 million. Wrap your head around that. Bad. Real bad.

    They are still in denial…

“According to the MAA, the reason behind the lower sales is due to the shorter working month, and the more stringent hire purchase loan approval from banks. The association, however, is expecting sales to pick up by March 2016, thanks the longer working month and continuation of promotional campaigns by car companies.”

They still try to justify the reduction of car sales and paint a rosy picture as if our industry is very healthy.

In reality, car prices are too high compared to median take home pay of average citizen, thus requiring long term hire purchase loan, ie, 9 years. Additionally, competitions are restricted via sole importer status, AP and high excise duty. Resulting in unsustainable business model.

Lets continue play our part as consumers, by maintaining our current rides and not buying any new cars (local, imported or CKD). If u need cars buy a second hand unit, which is much cheaper and the tax and duties was already paid by the first owner.

When the buying stop, the killing can too,
When we work together, we can win this…

Good for consumers and rakyat actually. Manufacturers are taking the heat and very soon will promote lower price and massive discounts. The 7 year max financing period is a good call. Better to go lower at 5 years. Car price shall be lower. And central bank need to cap the interests rates.

Apparently car dealer suffer great sales rate drop as well, all coming model will offer crazy discount especially KimChi. Heard new Vios offer RM8k rebate, Kia K3 15K, and VW jetta at 18k discount. Good to see them throw discount like tat.

Don’t think the smaller companies will survive if they keep throwing. Throwing prices many times means either selling at cost or below. Not sure how much they have in reserves to continue keeping operations afloat though. Looks like we could end up with less choices when it comes to brands at the end of it if this economic situation persists.

It is really about supply (production) and demand (sales). The diminishing production figure from 2015 is worrisome because it may indicate a slowing economy, in addition the sales figure can also mask the fact of a slowing economy as it may be influenced by selling old stock. BTW WHAT IS THIS “IGNORE THE COPY DATED 17 MARCH 2016) IN THE REPORT” the close bracket is not mine.

Lower the excise duty to help boost sales. Give exemptions to EEV and Hybrid again. It’s either that or lose the sales completely… bringing the economy to a halt… with he wait and see attitude. Property already stagnant, now car sales is going down, next?
