Car buffs (and paultan.org readers) who watched 2012’s The Avengers may recall seeing Tony Stark’s replacement for his Audi R8, which looks like a convertible version of the (then) upcoming Honda NSX. With the production NSX already on sale, would it be too much to assume that a convertible version of the reborn sports car is on its way?
That’s precisely what master renderer Theophilus Chin believes will happen, and to give us some idea what a Honda NSX roadster might look like, gaze upon his work here. As you can see, it is really quite an attractive proposition.
The absence of the roof section sees a few revisions to the NSX’s design. While the front and rear sections are unchanged, the side intakes near the doors have been reshaped to ensure the sleek lines are uninterrupted leading towards the vehicle’s rear.
To comply with safety requirements, roll hoops have been added here as well. Reinforcing structures should also be added beneath the NSX’s skin to ensure that rigidity remains unaffected with its open-top design.
Based on the render, it appears the NSX roadster will employ a powered, folding soft-top. The car’s mid-engine setup may limit the packaging of a hardtop, but it shouldn’t be dismissed as a possibility. Which would look better on it?
Should Honda make the NSX roadster a reality, expect the same powertrain as the coupe to be fitted – a mid-mounted 3.5 litre DOHC twin-turbo V6 driving the rear wheels, assisted by a rear Direct Drive Motor. Combined, the system offers 573 hp and 645 Nm.
What do you think of this Honda NSX roadster render? Do you think it is better looking than the coupe? Should Honda make it? Let us know in the comments below.
