MINI Hipster Hatch – how to go your own way

Mainstream isn’t for you, and you’ve always walked a different path. Here then is the purr-fect thing for cool cats who flip a finger at conventionality. The MINI Hipster Hatch, as it’s called, is like no other the company has built before – in announcing the edition today, MINI UK says its inspired by the kind of innovative thinking only found when one ignores the script.

Plenty of hip qualities in this one, the list being led by the new Fixed-Gear Drive – the Hipster Hatch has just one forward gear with a maximum speed of 40 km/h, so you can emulate the feeling of being on a bike when you’re in a car, because any faster just won’t do.

Inspired by the ‘Fixie’ pedal bike, the automaker has removed four of the forward gears to give you a greater feeling of control when you’re popping out for a superfood smoothie. The result? A MINI that’s lighter, simpler and more thrilling to drive, so it goes. Just don’t be in a rush to get to the toilet back home.

The model also features Instagram filtered windows, which offer 12 pre-loaded, selectable Instagram window filters that can help turn any journey into a nostalgic memory at the touch of a button, allowing you not to just take in the view but adjust it to suit your vibe.

The interior is where the fun really is though – retro is fashionable (witness the vinyl revival), and so for entertainment, digital has been junked in favour of a twin-deck cassette player with a tape-to-tape recording function, so you can relive that crackly warm analogue sound and even tape your favourite alternative music show directly from the radio.

The Hipster Hatch is also suitably dressed, inside and out. A choice of three exterior colours abound, each with their own version of novelty – there’s Brooklyn Blue, Organic Pumpkin (which looks downright delicious) and, if you’re really looking to make an impression, Monochromatic Green.

Perhaps the snazziest items on show is the seat material, which at first glance looks like a completely washed out idea but is actually an outright winner. Finished in repurposed genuine vintage denim so the colour and texture of each seat is unique to your MINI Hipster Hatch, you won’t get any more comfortable than this.
