In April, Mazda celebrated the production of its one millionth MX-5, a testament to the popularity of the iconic roadster. Ahead of the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the carmaker’s UK division has announced a special edition version of the roadster to celebrate the model’s success, dubbed the MX-5 Icon.
Only 600 units of the Icon will be made, and they’ll only be offered to customers in the UK at a price of 20,995 pounds (RM121,737). For that money, the car comes with a 131 PS 1.5 litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine, along with a choice of Meteor Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent exterior body colour.
Both choices will be accompanied by wing mirrors, a rear spoiler, side stripe decals (not pictured here) and front skirt, all finished in Soul Red Metallic. The wheels fitted on the Icon are 16-inch Gunmetal alloys. Extra equipment here include rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Inside, the cabin gets black leather seats.
The latest MX-5 Icon is based on the fourth-generation ND model. Previous iterations include the 2000 MX-5 Icon (NA), where 750 were built, all powered by a 1.8iS engine and painted Art Vin Red Mica.
Next, there was the 2005 MX-5 Icon (NB), which came with a choice of a 1.6 or 1.8 litre engine, and four colours options. Production of the NB Icon ended at 1,563 units. Finally, the 2007 MX-5 Icon (NC) saw 1,250 units built, with two engine options – 1.8i and 2.0i. Colours options included Copper Red, Stormy Blue and Marble White.
