In the United States, BMW is recalling certain models built between 2007 and 2012 over faulty in-tank fuel pumps, which may be fitted with insufficiently crimped wire contacts. The recall is set to commence on December 5, 2016.
According to the country’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the loose wires in these pumps could cause the connector to melt, potentially causing a fuel leak. A fuel pump failure could also result, which may cause the engine to stall and increase the risk of a crash.
The models involved include 2007 to 2011 X5, 2008 to 2011 X6, 2010 to 2011 X6 ActiveHybrid and 5 Series Gran Turismo as well as 2011 to 2012 5 Series and 6 Series models. Owners will be notified by BMW, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of charge.
