Kedah hopes for LRT to link major centres – report

The Kedah government intends to see a light rail transit (LRT) system link the major urban centres in the state for the people’s benefit, according to a Bernama report.

“Public transport such as stage buses are not the first choice, probably because of their lack of punctuality, so the people prefer their own transport to move around, but the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads have led to more accidents,” said chairman of the state agriculture and agro-based, transportation and primary industry committee Azman Nasrudin.

“This is why we are reviewing the public transport in Kedah and I also hope to see the major urban centres like Kulim and Kubang Pasu with a system like the LRT,” he added, in response to a question from Gurun representative Datuk Johari Abdul at the Kedah State Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, for stage bus services, the Kedah state government has identified new companies for the provision of the service in major towns for the state.

“Several routes had to be terminated as the number of passengers was small and it was difficult for the companies to meet the high cost of operations. We will look for ways to improve the quality of stage bus services to encourage more Kedah folks to use the bus service, including providing free WiFi,” Azman said.

Just make it like Thailand, use smaller bus or pick-up truck where it will more economical to run and allow them to stop anywhere they want.

Essentially the Kedah state government should first provide free public stage bus service.

  • Each City Council should be encourage to built, or at the very least plan, for LRTs (or BRTs) for their citizens with their own funds as well as support from the Federal Government. The Penang Transportation Master Plan should be emulated by several other city centres notably Ipoh and Johor Bahru, to connect suburbs with the city centre; from there, should the financial goals achieve in any given time (5-10 years), they can proceed to construct it following a gazetted plan.

Aside form Penang, Kuching, Sarawak and Iskandar, Johor are already mulling with introducing rail transportation, I see Malaysian developing a rail or Bus industry to support our growing infrastructure is alot more beneficial to Tun M’s idyllic dream of a 3rd National Car company. Germany, Japan and China developed and perfected their public transportation industry and are now exporting either their products or expertise worldwide, somewhere where our engineers can improve, and this is something that even Malaysia’s puny Economic Of Scale will fare better than the much more competitive Automotive Sector.

If any state wanted to build their own LRT, go ahead and built with their own state fund, if they have their excess fund and the state is making money.

go ahead. bina ja, kalau hang ada duit banyak, federal money is not for this. Raise your own tabung, get anak kedah to donate.

Kedah State, let alone Alor Setar and Sungai Petani having LRT? Not yet…..better for Ipoh (with Klang Valley, Kampar, Kuala Kangsar districts and Taiping Municipality) to have local Komuter services starting from Kampar KTM through to Taiping KTM stations (Kampar New Town should soon have its own Komuter Station to cover for Kampar New Town/UTAR and Malim Nawar vicinities) instead of even making our Malaysia’s 3rd National Car which I think is a ridiculous waste of National Funds already diminishing due to 1 trillion RM < debt!

Lets keep it objective and optimistic. For those who haven’t been to Kedah, Sungai Petani and Kulim has heaps of potential to grow. If Penang succeeds with the Hong Kong like transformation plans. Cental and South Kedah has the capacity to grow in the future. Currently driving takes 40 minutes to get to the bridge or jetty without traffic. LRT as a quick access to the ferry terminals from Kedah might be just be a possibility in future

Mukhriz, STOP wasting money. They are a lot of kampung folks in Sik & Baling facing hardship-volatile rubber price, No support mechanism. The urban poor in SP, Kulim lack of upward mobility, lack of job opportunities. Langkawi is overcrowded with tourists, the beaches are dirty, losing it’s lustre. Other districts are also have their distinctive problems.
Having LRT should be on the bottom list. Improve stage coach buses, increase stop points, provide incentive for the locals to take the buses. If you have a park & ride from SP to Penang, a lot of cars will be off the roads.

Come on. Do a feasibility study or ROI analysis for an investment. Don’t just do what you think n want only. Improve it to become an industrial or tourist requirement, then only start.
