Hyundai rolls out fingerprint unlock, start, preferences

Hyundai has revealed more about its fingerprint unlock and start technology that will debut in brand’s Chinese market, longer wheelbase Santa Fe SUV in the first quarter of this year. It’s pretty much like how most people unlock their smartphones today, so it’s not groundbreaking in concept, although it’s new for autos.

To unlock the vehicle, the driver needs to place a finger on the sensor located on the door handle. The encrypted fingerprint information will be identified and delivered to the fingerprint controller inside the vehicle. The driver can also start the vehicle by touching the ignition button equipped with a fingerprint scanning sensor.

The tech also provides a customised driving environment. Matching information of driver preference with fingerprint data, the vehicle automatically adjusts seating positions, connected car features, and side mirror angles accordingly.

“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences. This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer,” said Albert Biermann, president and head of R&D at Hyundai.

One big question is security. The Korean giant says that with capacitance recognition, which detects differentials in the electricity level in various parts of the fingertip, fingerprint tech efficiently prevents forgeries and faked fingerprints.

The technology’s chance of misrecognising another person’s fingerprint as the driver’s is only one in 50,000, making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys, Hyundai says. Also, through real-time learning of fingerprints supported by a ‘dynamic update’ system, the fingerprint system can continually improve its success rate.

The carmaker will apply the fingerprint technology in selected markets and gradually expand it. What’s your take on this new tech for cars?

Hyundai and Proton started around the same time.

Yet today, Hyundai sells millions of cars worldwide, and the same cannot be said for Proton.

This is because the Koreans decided to stop eating kimchi 8 times everyday and lepak.

They decided to be hardworking, and now they produce great cars.

Harap Proton also will be successful with Geely’s input

        Hyundai started 1967.
        Proton started 1983.

Logically, 1983 ≠ 1967. You don’t control time like me.

Hyundai owners can’t get jockey service, while X70 owners can get jockeys like a boss. Girlfriends of Hyundai owners malu shiot because have to wait for their boyfriends to park the car, while X70 owners stroll in with their happy girlfriends. Ends up, Hyundai owners will have a lot of broken relationships. It is the reason why I get X70, I care for my relationship.

        • First time I heard a car can break relationships but when come to think about it, it’s quite possible this could happen. In that case, I rather go for X70 like you did. I too, value my girlfriend more than any frivolous feature on a car. Cheers.
