Lotus reveals Type 136 First Edition e-bike, RM125,910

Fusing Formula 1 engineering with electric bicycles (e-bikes) is the Lotus Type 136 First Edition. Coming in an exclusive limited first edition launch production run of just 136 bikes, the Type 136 is priced at 25,000 euro (RM125,910) and will go on sale in Europe beginning April 2024.

Built for Lotus by HPS of Monaco, the Type 136 First Edition is a performance e-bike boasting of the lightest e-bike motor system on the market, weighing just 1.2kg. Every Type 136 will come with an edition number and is decorated in Lotus’ iconic John Player Special racing livery of gold and black.

The electric motor, located in the compact bottom bracket, weighs just 300 grammes, with the overall weight of the Type 136 coming in at 9.8 kg while the battery, disguised as a water bottle, detaches from the frame at the push of a button. Campagnolo supplies the groupset for the Type 136 First Edition along with a Campagnolo Bora Ultra carbon-fibre wheel set and Pirelli Zero Race tyres.

Lotus is no stranger to human powered two-wheelers, previously involved with the design of the Type 108 track bicycle as well as the Type 110 with monocoque carbon-fibre frame. Recognised as one of the most iconic machines of all time, the Type 108 was ridden by Chris Boardman to a gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Feng Qingfeng, CEO, Lotus Group, commented, “I am proud to launch the Lotus Type 136 as the next chapter in our high-performance journey. For the past 75 years, Lotus has been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of innovation on the road and track. Type 136 shows that we continue to do so. Launching alongside the Eletre, Emeya and Evija, it will further expand global perceptions of what to expect from Lotus.”

Words that aged like milk when May’s Lotus Esprit performed more reliably than Clarkson’s Porsche 928 and Hammond’s Ford Mustang.
