Clearer Proton BLM Side Profile Spyshots

Clear_Proton_BLM_Spyshot_1.jpg

These clear photos were shot by KM_Survivor of the Lensa Malaysia forums, a Malaysian photography forum, which explains why the photos are of such good quality! It shows the side profile of the new Proton BLM very clearly, so we can have a rough idea of headroom and interior space as well as the general proportions of the car.

Just a recap for those who are not in the loop - the Proton BLM is supposed to be Proton’s base line model, a replacement for the aging Proton Saga/Proton Iswara model. It is said to be based on a modified Proton Savvy platform.

Two more photos after the jump.

it’s still has it’s “mask” on. Wait till it’s revealed properly la, before judging the looks.

I’m more concerned by the quality. Proton has yet to launch a glitch-free car.

  17. freeze said,

The boot is covered with something obviously because the back is so misaligned.
The number plate is actually on the boot lid. They taped it on the bumper. Rear door windows are pretty big.

But take a look at the front fender. The bottom does not end straight, it eats into the runningboard panel, Whats that about?

Anyway does look good, unless they had covered up all the ugly parts.

    I really like the rims.

The Gen2 sedan price I heard cheaper than Gen2 HB. If the 1.3HB price is RM46K, the Gen2 Sedan 1.3M should be around RM43. If the Gen2 1.3 Sedan is RM43, then the BLM must be RM40K. I expect the base M version will be around RM35-37K.

folks, i guess you would have noticed by now that the back lid is rather unnaturally straight hence it might not be the actual product. Overall, i believe, the BLM is targeted to mass market which is pretty much of Proton’s formation intention that is to form a “People’s Car” car manufacturer (ironically similar to VW back in the 40s).

To many commenters out there, please stick to the topic and be realistic and fair in your comments.

The overall quality of debate has gone down significantly if compared to couple of years ago. The use sms text is great however it should be used within text messaging context. A single noun or a one liner comment could be expanded to enable other readers to better understand your thoughts at that point of time. Let’s make this a constructive forum for everyone’s betterment.

    Cheers!

i agree with chery. the B-pillar should be blackened. Notice that the Vios & Volvo S60 have body colored B-pillar which spoiled the side profile look.

the rims & tyres are so small and skinny too. I hope that Proton don’t use those. The wheel arch is also less aggressive than the savvy.

I have a feeling that this car will be no more spacious than the Vios, which is pretty dissapointing.

it is a savvy sedan..torsional rigidity is equal to savvy..so ride and handling shud be better..

slighty heavier than savvy..lighter than gen2

interior has been redesign and QUALITY OF MATERIALS has been improved(not really sure bout this..really hoping its true!!!then most bashers boleh diam)

front has been modified to fit campro engines!!gearbox is not amt:-(

they said two engine choices but i dont know what will they fit in!!proton got no 1.5 so anyone have any idea??1.2 and 1.3 its impossible??so???

    interior is dark…good news

it is more expensive than savvy but cheaper than myvi..it is directed at myvi..not viva!!

head unit still havent been considered..but most probably wif ipod jack but mp3??dont know yet…but it is targeted for young ppl..so shud be good head unit….

i am so looking forward for it!!!

I think 2 kind of tramission, manual or auto.. more then 2 kind of engines.. Already got Gen.2, Satria neo & Waja have 1.6L.. Savvy sedan also got? I dont think so.. I think only for 1.3L old campro.. Since it is cheap, budjet car i dont think that expensive renault engine & AMT is in that savvy sedan!

Seriously hoping that back end is a mask. If that’s its real boot lid then we will have another Proton with a butt ugly err.. butt. The front end could be its saving grace though.

And Malaysians, let’s pray this one looks good. Because, since it’s BLM, most likely we are going to see lots of them on the streets.

  68. aizat84 said,

    June 29, 2007 @ 1:30 am

It is not the final touch yet. I bet that is not the real rear bonnet. it is definately waja’s bonnet that why we can see 2 place to put no. plate .. and i think the final plate place is at the bottom.

And the from bumper at the picture is using current gen-2 bumpers. that’s why they disguise with using the black tape. it is not the final design yet. I quiet sure about that.

engine? no idea. maybe 1.3 campro.

  70. armandd said,

    June 29, 2007 @ 5:40 am

this BLM and vios are from the same class of car, that’s why people compare them. vios is RM80k because of the ridiculous tax and excise duty, otherwise it would cost about 35-45k.

  71. tHe CuLpRit said,

    June 29, 2007 @ 6:52 am

I’d say Vios is closer to Gen.2 than the BLM/Savvy… but then i might be wrong

anyhow, tax be damned, the Vios is priced at 80k, simple as that. Thats why it should not be compared…. it sucks, but yeah, foreign cars are pricier than it should be and we as consumer have to accept that and do a fair comparision instead.

People looking to buy the BLM when it comes out will be buying it becos they cant afford anything that cost 60k and above.. if u can afford a Vios, u wont even be looking at the BLM at all, no?

Actually, Proton already have bad reputation. Imagine this, a man who once stole something from his friend and get caught. Maybe after that, he never steal again. If his friend lose something again the next time, who’s gonna be the suspect? Proton have poor quality before. Almost all Malaysian have experience with Proton’s cars. What make thing worst is, foreign make cars are going cheaper and cheaper. People not reluctant to invest more money as long as they are satisfied because cars in Malaysia is overpriced. By the way, I think it’s a good initiative from Proton to come out with mass produced car. It will help them a lot. Just make sure the pricing is right. And please, no continential parts again. Just look at Tiara and Savvy. People are quite ’scared’ to own them. :)

Frankly speaking, I like the design and I really don’t mind of buying one. For me the most important thing is the price. This car price should be lower than RM40K (around RM35K (M)-RM38K (A). If they got HLine version, then it is ok to price is slightly above RM40K.

Anything above that will be hard to sell as I would rather buy a Gen2 Sedan for an extra RM3K-RM4K.

Savvy price must be slashed down to maybe RM32K (M) and RM35K (AMT).

If Proton can do this, I’m pretty sure Perodua will start lose the game really badly. I’m sick watching Perodua’s antics and greed especially after the success of MyVi. The has become so greedy. Just look at how they price the Viva. It is way overpriced.

Guys, guys, guys (and also any ladies out there)…..hold your horses!!!!
First of all, this car is still in prototype stage( P-0 stage). There is still lot of things need to be done to this car. Secondly the car is heavily camoufludged, so pls dont judge it so quicly. Thirdly, the car uses a savvy elongated platform but the exterior design is totally new. The car comes in 2 variants, 1.3 A.T and M.T. The M.T comes with a new transmission which i can’t reveal ( not Mitsu’s one) and the A.T uses the Mitsu trans. The exterior and interior is well designed with proportionate boot space, ample amount of leg room at the back and good interior built and quality. The car will be using the latest technology of drive-by-wire and added safety features. The most interesting past of all this is, the pricing; it will be priced around the old saga/iswara (around 30K).
Hopefully this info is sufficient for everybody out there. Cheers!!!

p/s: Pls dont judge it by just looking at it, worst to say looking at the camoufludge one. Wait till its launched, then judge it. Btw it is scheduled to be launched end of december or early january 2008. Have a nice day!

This one doesnt impress me much, probably it’s under heavy ‘masking’. However even with ‘masking’, one can always tell roughly how the design is. Well. this one, doesnt impress me much, so sorry. 1NZFE, I’m with you.

I think most of you don’t understand what is the function of the disguise. All this ‘black’ thing is the method on shaping the car using existing platform before transfer it to final mould. Looking at the current state of the BLM this process is yet finished, and need more time to finish the cues. So hope you all understand now.

For sure BLM going to use the Campro 1.3 engine. If not why they start to use Renault engine for Waja 1.8 and Savvy, and buy Clio’s technology to make Savvy and Satria Neo? Renault has already helping Proton sincerely to achieve P1’s goal, not like those culprit Mitsu and Citroen, and most of you out there still wanna contribute to them by buying their goods? Mitsu is the first person argue about Proton intention to establish R&D department, and together with Citroen giving to P1 geat investment loss with Tiara and Juara’s platform. Lucky P1 managed to save the Juara’s paltform and develod this for new Juara Replacement Model.

So just hope this BLM model will be good as Savvy, and P1’s will bring new more model soon.

To 1NZFE, Arena(Jumbuck),Savvy and Satria Neo is fast selling model out of Malaysia especially in UK and OZ.

P.S. : Waiting for Putra Relacement Model hehe :->

Like The King said…I believe it released by year end as Govt said b4. I reserved by comments right after I see the final designed stage. At this stage, our eye deceived us as it was masked & they could be bodily change again.

I just hope it turn out simple & with contempary designed since the target market is for affordabale income demographic segment. It will definately would not please everyone especially the Bashers as they only pray for Protons early death & anticipate it turn out bad. Bashers just luv to curse & never pray for recovery. They will cheer if the designed fail as thier mission to kill is met. Issnt it…they are typical Baddies who just wish the sick guy to die.

Alifz, just to clarify some things that u have said,…..the black ‘thingy’ that is pasted on the car are not used to shape the car….its a special scotch tape, used to only camoufludge the car. This tape can withstand high temperatures and has a good bond on the body of the car. The ‘boxy’ effect at rear end is done using polybox, sticked together with this scotch tape and then sprayed black. This car’s exterior design has been finalized, only the interior is yet to be finalized. The stage that u were talking about, is the styling stage where clay models are used to refine the design either by hand or milling machine. Hope this info helps u. As i mentioned above, since this car is heavily camoufludged ( lots of boxy effect at rear and front), so pls dont judge it so early. It might suprise all of you once the product is launched. Cheers!!!

p/s: For futher info on this model, pls refer to my previous post. Thx.

    1) Tiara
    2) Juara
    3) Arena
    4) Sastria Neo
I think this new model will included in this list.

=> Well, too early to say as this model not even on sale yet. Just wait see how this model perform and most important the quality of the end product and pricing. By the way, doesn’t mean these models as you mentioned didn’t sell well in Malaysia so as other countries such as middle east countries etc. Even the Mercedes Benz new R-Class didn’t sale well worldwide since the launched. If Proton’s design is too bad why Satria Neo and Gen-2 get a whelming response from the Japanese at last Tokyo Autoshow? Don’t you compare it with Juara and Savvy, because the base model is old fashioned vehichle.

to be frank most malaysians are bashers. who types without knowledge of the subject.

That is a prototype mule. it is heavily taped to disguise its real shape. underneath the tape they usually put plastic corrugated sheets to hide the curves of the body. you can see it on the boot and front fenders (to hide the front headlamp shape).

How can you judge the shape by seeing this taped-up mule?

PS. anyone caught glimpse of a more heavily taped car running currently around malaysia?

The front end has a slightly longer Neo look. This may be to clear the Campro engine which had clearance issues when installed in the Savvy. The roof line is definately from the Savvy. With the VIM by Bosch, the Campro should be an excellent all round engine.
Since this is a sedan, when priced in the 30K range, it would give some serious competition to the Perodua cars. I hope it goes this way. Pricing it above the 35K mark would be a bad idea. Some people might even be silly enough to buy a Viva over the BLM even though they are in different maket segments.
Perodua’s strength is that they managed to have so many trim levels for Myvi (and Viva although overpriced), that they were able to cater to many people with different budgets. Proton should do this to with a bare bones car to a high trim level car between 33,999 to 43,999 (Saga was sold at an all time low of RM28K I think). Since the cost of developing the Campro is probably amortized (hopefully!!!), they can keep the cost lower than the Renault engined Savvy.
They should copy Perodua’s business model and come out with both guns loaded. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel, if Perodua made it work with the Malaysian public, then Proton should copy that.

For me, design is already ok if not excellent. The main thing is the pricing. If the price is RM30K as what has been said by our insider here, it is a very good news to the public. I’m also very sure Perodua will suffer becoz they’ve become too greedy since the success of MyVi by pricing the Viva at the ridiculously high price. I won’t surprise if Proton will eventually beat Perodua by 1Q 2008.

To Sifu, I guess you’re working with Proton. Pls tell your R&D engineers not to mess up again with all the mistakes happened in your Gen2. Pls make sure your interior quality at least at par with Myvi. Don’t ever do silly mistakes like no glove box, PW switches at the middle (it should be at the door!), seat design and fabric quality etc. etc. I owned a Gen2 since 2004 and I can list down to you 101 mistakes Proton engineers did to the Gen2. Sometimes the mistakes was soo obvious until I thought the Proton R&D people are working with no brains. Maybe Tg Mahaleel does not pay attention into build quality since he only interested in racing. Hopefully your new CEO won’t be like him.

Anywayz.. VIM is mated with CPS to improve low torque at Campro.. If BLM want to be cheap i dont think VIM also in the engine, is useless to put in and i think the torque may only improve a bit.. Campro 1.3 is the best on its category, i dont think having VIM will help him cut cost.. VIM is from bosch, so having it is like paying license to Bosch on each VIM.. Only what i know CPS is from Lotus.. So big chances for cheap budjet car is just a old campro 1.3 engine with manual tranmission..

Log on below and see how the similarity between this BLM (minus buttock) and Clio II: -

    http://www.cars-directory.net/gallery/renault/clio_ii/1999/

    http://www.cars-directory.net/history/renault/clio_ii/

Claimed to be the most powerful engine in it class by some ignorant Protonian out there. But the true fact is this engine is the smallest “lawn mover” and “entry level” capacity for Clio II. Clio engine portfolio included 1.4L, 1.6L, 1.8L, 1.9L & 2.0L.

    Why don’t this P1’s junk acquired 1991 1.8L 16-valve engine producing 137hp capable of reaching 125mph (200 km/h)?

for me, proton still dont have a good ideas to beat toyota or honda especially the design…so many of us, who have a little budget ‘terpaksa’ buy this car to show their own stylish..hahaha

    agreed with normaluser and longdongsilver,

if this car priced between 30k-35k ppl still buy super overpriced 1.0L 44k viva….then they are not only silly but brainless as well. coz dis is 1.3L category. of course it is still too early to say until we see the actual car.
but based on current info….only the price n built quality will determine whether it will eat perodua katak/viva alive….ahhaha

unfortunately….there are many brainless ppl around….
i once asked a friend (girl) whether she prefers a new mercedez slk200k or p2 myvi if both cars selling at rm50k. guess what was her answer? she prefer p2 myvi.

    reason??????

coz she said no need maintenence (low maintenence)

typical 3rd world mentality of malaysians….sigh

king, I have no intention of being rude, though my statement may sound sexist, it is a fact that women should NEVER EVER deny: when it comes to car, women are pathetic. Oh sure, the papers are trying to change that thought by featuring some hot-looking celebrities, models, or w/e saying “I desire for M6″, “I wished for Enzo Ferrari”, “Golf GTi is my choice”, but that changes nothing.

I showed my classmate before a picture of my (ex-)dream car, Murcielago (now it’s the one with LP640 spyder at the back ;)), and she thought it was useless w/o space for shopping/kids. I decided to NEVER EVER talk abt cars with any women at all since then.

Now, abt the spy pic. It does look like it’s based on the Savvy’s platform, which is good thing. Only, I’m just afraid they might repeat the mistake in Gen2: horrid interior which uses “WIN!! FREE!! SAVE!!” materials. Then, on a more careful inspection, the 3rd brake light doesn’t look like LED to me, though I hope I’m wrong at this.

Just make sure it can fit in the Campro instead of the Renault engine, and it’ll be great. Also, I’m sure they’ll offer a H-line model with ABS and airbag, a strong selling point of a car in Msia. This is indeed, a commendable effort by Proton in their serious attempt to become even with the rest of the field.

    And yet.

I’m gonna agree with king. Sorry Proton, you’ve worked hard, and yet you’re nt forgiven by the Msians thanks to the old management and the gahmen. We are a country who couldn’t give a sheez abt Lotus RnH, tough bodyshell, etc, we just selfishly want a “washing machine with 4 wheels” which is ultra reliable (as if), cheap (yeah right), and made in Japan or anything associated with it (absolute statement).

what kind of shit design is that? just might beat the savvy in terms of the ugliest car in the world.

no hope man this proton. management who allow this to be made deserve to be shot. 10 times.

To eeheng. How about Buka Lu Mata (BLM) meaning ask you to open your eyes. Please wake up! This is not old models and old technology which you found in old models from Proton (excluding savvy & satria neo) as the last two models, improved a lot than ever before. so stay tune.

well said bro..eventho ..last 2 models(savvy n neo) has good track, those blind bashes keep talking about power windows/ saga/wira problems..

    The Unicons, and theking,

Thanks for your reply. If the gearbox is not from Mitsubishi, then probably, it’ll be from Renault (And is VW a possibility too?). Of course I’m only guessing here.
However, is it possible to match the Campro engine with the Renault gearbox, as from my knowledge, Campro engines are only design to be match with Mitsubishi gearboxes, as the development of the Campro engine (S4PH and S4PE) itself is based on the Mitsu’s 4G18 engine. Anybody is free to correct me if I’m wrong.

    mr. topgun,

still a little too early to condemn the design, right?

myvi ain’t an award winner in terms of design but it still sell like hot cakes. In fact, if there was an award for ugliest car in think myvi could win top 3 position. sadly, ppl here dun give a damn bout design. thats y my eye sakit see so many ugly, bulky, boxy cars around.

designwise i think p1 beats p2 hands down in recent models. can’t say the same bout built quality/space though.
