Aston Martin no longer coolest brand in the UK?

Aston Martin Cygnet
Does this look cool to you?

What’s cooler than an Aston Martin? An iPhone. Probably no thanks to James Bond movies’ portrayal of the Aston Martin being the ultimate playboy spy’s car, the brand has sat at the top of the annual UK CoolBrands survey for three years consequetively, until this year where it has been displaced by the iPhone.

The survey polled 2,500 voters for a shortlist of cool brands and the final twenty were voted on by a panel of judges including DJ Edith Bowman and Adam & Eve founding partner James Murphy. No other carmaker made the seemingly very male-oriented top 10 list, but Ferrari managed to come in at 15th place.

Look after the jump for the top 20 list.

  • Really stupid list Paul! No offense to you of course but, come on. Supposed to be brands, not products. Iphone is not a brand. Ipod is not a brand. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are not a brand. British are so stupid or what?

    Hi Dom,

A product can also be a brand name that uniquely identifies the trademark holder. So yes, Ipod, Playstation3, Xbox are all brand names.

Yesterday, it was reported that Aston Martin's Kuwaiti owners ran out of cash. So Proton, wanna buy? We can have team Aston Martin-Lotus F1 then.

BRO/SIS: watch your word or otherwise you'll embarrassed; not by others but YOURSELF. Read more about BRAND otherwise we're CAP AYAM BRAND mentality.

Sorry if I'm little harsh. By the way, I'm not a Briton but you must respect everybody let alone a nation.

Purchase Aston, and then sell it for 1 pound? Just like MV Agusta? Don't do that, man. Don't be a snoob.

Anyway, what kind of enhancement will exora receive after this? Odour-proof compartment for storing durian / belacan? Seriously, the proton chaiman bragging about a teh tarik holder… International jokes!

This case of a sport car company trying desperately to be be an all-rounder company…. Its just like what VW tries to do (and fails) so many years ago.

After this : Aston Martin lorry

  • What did VW try to do that it failed branding wise? VW is probably the most successful car company in having multiple brands under one roof and sharing platforms among them. The probably exception of this would be Seat.

  • VW has successfully managed their brands from the super luxury Bugatti, Bentley, and Lambo down to Skoda. And now they are snapping right on the heels of Toyota!

yea, then all Proton cars sold can have labels like "Tuned by lotus, powered by Aston Martin". Made in Malaysia. wow!

  • At the end of the day, the survey results speak for themselves. The fact of the matter is, every other phone manufacturer is copying Apple. Overhyed? Maybe, but simply because the marketplace can't get enough of it. Overrated? Maybe, but the fact is almost every other smartphone manufacturer is playing catch up, just look at the design and user interfaces on the phones coming out by HTC, Palm, Blackberry, etc Overpriced? Not true when you compare with other smartphones of similar hardware specs. Outdated? Not when the 3GS is one of the fastest phones on the market demonstrated by some of the games available on it. Even the game console manufacturers couldn't stop talking about the iPhone at the recent Tokyo gameshow.

But like the iPod, it is not so much the hardware, it is the ecosystem of the iPhone with the App Store that makes it stand above other phones on the market. You cannot beat the sheer amount of apps that can expand the functionality of the iPhone. That is what's so cool.

  • I am so agree with Chun . 3GS has the fastest processor currently in the market . Outdated ? Please get your fact straight before you are making a statement .

The synchronization of hardware-software of iPod/iPhone with iTunes/iPhoto is state of the art , and I can guarantee you can find anyone else . The breadth of the functionality of the software and hardware is so wide , giving the availability of more than thousand and thousand of application , I can see the usefulness .

I am an mechanical engineer . I utilized the iPhone function well . Application for engineering purposes really really help me a lot . You cant get this type of service in Palm or Nokia or a FERRARI .

The list speak out for itself .

I'm not a smartphone fan at all, I'm the type of person who still believes a phone is only to make calls n text, maybe a bit of music n photography as well. Anytime, I always believe that if I want to surf the net anywhere, a netbook + mobile broadband pwns any smartphones.

However, I will admit, iphone's quite a something. Must've been the touchscreen system, it's unique but works awesomely. I heard that it's bcuz it's designed to work with fingers rather than with stylus. Now why can't anybody else does that for their touchscreen system too?

Nokia N-series is more overrated than iphone to me. N97 sucks like hell, and friggin expensive. The only impressive thing about it is the way it folds up, and… that's it.

  • Tokmoh ,

iPhone 's principle of operation is functioning base solely on capacitive motion gesture . Our finger is capacitive , theoretically , we can even operate an iPhone using any part of our body as long as it is our body .

There are so many products in the market that are now utilising the capacitive capability in their products and they are always one step behind Apple . Their products , undeniable , some are nicely design , but when come to OS and the " fluidity " operation when the phone is in heavy duty . Apple won it in every aspect , from designing to manufacturing process , and marketing strategy .

I do not own N97 neither iphone. But from the reviews, N97 is very much superior than iphone. Iphone 3Gs is all about speed only. Basic function like phone call quality still sucks.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
  • I would not say the N97 is a very much superior phone to the 3GS. Specwise that are very comparable with undoubtedly superior photo taking capabilities. But then again the iPhone makes it up with the browser and OS ease of use. N97 still uses a somewhat old school Symbian OS. I don't know how good or bad the 3GS is as a phone but on my 1st gen iPhone I can say that the call quality is about the same as my old Nokia and Sony Ericsson smart phones, no better no worse. One more tidbit, the N97 since it's launch in June 09 has sold 500,000 units. The iPhone sold one million units on it's first weekend of sales. Don't get me wrong, I am not an Apple/iPhone fanboy (though my preference is for the iPhone), but the name of the game nowadays is not so much the hardware alone, it's the whole ecosystem and how everything gels together. The main battleground for consumer electronics especially mobile gadgets is and will be the App stores.

Their OS is the winning key. If Apple had thought to licence their computer operating system to other computer manufacturers, we all could be using Mac OS computers, and Bill Gates won't be the richest man in the world!

KF & Chun: Yeah man, if there is one thing that annoys me about iphone, is it's battery life is quite short (a reason why I'm not too fond of smartphones and stick with basic phones which I only need to recharge every 3, 4, or even 5 days).

Oh, and the fact that only Maxis is allowed to distribute it… Celcom and Digi should become iphone 3GS distributor too!!
