  • Good to see the new 911 Turbo S again. The last 911 Turbo S was the previous generation type 996 which was not bad but didnt give any extra horsepower compared to its last air-cooled predecessor, the 911 Turbo S type 993. We can only dream of owning it here in Malaysia but in a few years time, probably can afford a used one overseas where the prices are more realistic. Perhaps my dream of buying a used SL should change to the 911 Turbo S when I resettled abroad.

The 996 Turbo S did give extra hp over the standard 996 Turbo but it was a bit silly because it's the same powergain if you added the 'powerkit' option with the standard Turbo. Incidentally in Malaysia at the time most Turbos were bought with the powerkit and whatever other extra bits offered as standard in the Turbo S was already available as optional extras for the standard Turbo. So by the time the 996 Turbo S came out, it was really a non-event. Quite silly.

Compared to the 993, the Turbo S version was really special. It was both lighter and more powerful as well I think. Serious effort and offered real uniqueness and value.

Today, I think no one would really bother with an old 996 Turbo S but the older 993 Turbo S is still a special collector's item.
