Volvo S80 T5 launched – two versions, RM268k and RM295k

Volvo Car Malaysia today introduced the Volvo S80 T5, which replaces the S80 2.5T as the flagship model in the country. Two variants of the form are available, these being the S80 T5 Powershift and the T5 Exclusive Powershift.

Both are powered by a four-cylinder 2.0 litre turbocharged mill making 240 hp at 5,500 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1,800-5,000 rpm, and the engine – which features direct injection and twin variable camshafts – is mated to a six-speed Powershift transmission.

Performance specs include a 0-100 kph sprint time of 7.7 seconds and a 230 kph top speed. Essentially, this is the same lump as found on the Ford Mondeo EcoBoost, with a higher state of tune (that’s available in other markets).

As befits the suffix (and additional price), the T5 Exclusive gets more in the way of kit and features. There’s Pedestrian Detection as well as new Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, features that were unavailable in the previous variant.

The T5 Exclusive also features Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which activates at speeds above 30 kph to automatically adjust the car’s distance to vehicles ahead. The system is adjustable to five different time intervals to the vehicle ahead.

The variant also has Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning as well as Active Bending Lights and Personal Car Communicator with keyless drive as standard items.

Safety features on both variants include Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and a host of other acronyms, from ABS, EBD, EBA, SIPS, WHIPS, IDIS and DSTC right into RAB (ready alert brake) and FBS (fading brake support).

Inside, the T5 – which now comes wearing the Dynamic chassis – gets new design features, with the S80 T5’s leather interior being in grey with cross brushed aluminium inlays and the the T5 Exclusive’s in a grey/beige mix, with classic wood decor inlays, the last also to be found on the gearshift and steering wheel.

The car comes with an eight-speaker audio system, and additional features on the T5 Exclusive are a six-CD in-dash changer, Bluetooth connectivity and two rear sockets for headsets.

As for wheels, the S80 T5 runs with 16-inch Oden alloys and 225/55 series tyres, while the T5 Exclusive comes shod with 17-inch Cassini-design wheels and correspondingly-sized 225/50 rubbers. Price-wise, the S80 T5 goes for RM268,000 while the T5 Exclusive is priced at RM295,000, both on-the-road, without insurance.

The instrumental gauges I think is influences from Mercedes-Benz gauges styling.

Why pay so much for a China car? I rather buy a Volkswagen instead. At least its fully Made in Germany?

If you cannot decide, ask yourself this question….Would you buy an Akira aircon or a Panasonic aircon for your house?

Do you think this car was designed and engineered by Volvo’s new owners?

Eric Tang… I wonder how much you know about cars.

If you think so highly about VW…. well you haven’t owned one.

The drain hole in a Golf still clogs and has been for the past 25 years or so, and when it does, water gets inside the car.

The speedo and other instruments always fail.

The gearbox? You’d be lucky to go past 150,000km on a manual! Good luck reaching that on an auto.

Rust around the windows says genuine VW.

And VW are made in South Africa, Mexico and a few other countries.

If you read what JDpower and What Car have consistently reported over the past few years, Audi and VW rank at the bottom of reliability surveys.

If you want durability, go for Toyota. If you want to show that you’re a businessman with govt connections, buy a Mercedes. If you want performance without durability, BMW.

I think the Volvo S60 T6 has got everything…. performance, technology, style, luxury, safety, AWD.

      Not quite.

Ford has used some Mazda engines such as the MZR in their newer Focus.

Duratecs, for example, were used only by Fords and were in their previous Focus and are dinosaurs.

The Ecoboost is a totally new line. Among other things, by vaporising fuel as it gets into the cylinder, it brings down the air temperature and thus increases the amount of oxygen… something that an intercooler would have done.

The Ecoboost is widely accepted to be a very advanced design, better than VWs TSI.

Lols, u try driving this Volvo out and see if people will look at the Passat CC or ur Volvo first. And who says Passat CC is not safe?

        • tishaban on Jul 15, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Nobody is saying the Passat CC is not safe but the Volvo S80 has more safety features and Volvo as a company has been focusing on safety for decades. In Malaysia nobody will hijack a Volvo, that’s one hell of an advantage if personal safety is your main objective.

Decide what’s important for you and then buy the car that fits your objectives.

For Volvo – if you planning pass on the car to your kids and grandchild then go ahead, if not you are gonna lose a lot when you plan to change your change car…Volvo still has a LOW resale value!!

No matter you drive a Volvo or Mercedes, or even RR, if you are seen not giving way to an ambulance rushing to hospital, you will immediately be looked down as TIDAK BERTAMADDUN! (I have seen S-class owner driving his car doing benda yang kurang ajar)
Tidak bertamaddun another example is attacking hospital (I guess Obama would not care if his arm forces attack hospital). We all will be laughing at US.

It seems that Volvo is not bothering much on specs with the S80. Why buy this when the S60 is newer and better?

Volvo Web page still show start from 298K…so they might need to change that..
Their S40 would do more marketing and pricing structure. It should take on the Camry/Accord easily.

Well-kept, low mileage but at dirt cheap price. If I have a friend interested in the lowest spec Viva, I would recommend him this. I bet the owner was paid below 20k pathetically….

I wouldn’t laugh so much at the chinese. And also, Volvo is from Sweden, so will conform to EU standards. The British (who are very good car critics) used to laugh at the koreans, then the Hyundai Getz came along. The chinese may be behind, but i don’t think they’ll be behind for long

  • Good to see the new S80 with the T5 engine option but it is also sad to see the end of the 5 cylinder turbo engine in the lineup. I will definitely hang on to my V70XC Cross Country. The engine is sporty with a warble note and the power is just nice with the fat and flat torque.

  • People with no money will always search for alternatives. “Better buy this than that”, this car is not good, price too expensive, better buy that car” etc. Fyi, volvo is one of luxury cars and u wanna talk about the built quality? Arghh! Come one guys! Try out one, be the ‘adil’ judge, touch the material quality, feel the handling n performance, then baru go ahead with comments. If u havent try/test drive, listen to others’ story, then bring it up here, act like uve driven the car before, just go ahead with ur babbling. My dad drove merc, bmw audi volvo and vw. Still keep all those cars mentioned above. Yes. Still hvg all of them in his garage. He will definitely grab the V logo most of the time. China made? Gosh! Buta kayu. Previously, “wud u buy CFL(china phone) or samsung?” Answer will be samsung. But for 2014? “I wud rather pick XIAOMI rather than Samsung.” :-)
